NAFTA was initiated by HW Bush. There have been Trade agreements before and after NAFTA. Whether you like it or not Global trade is a reality. These days, you can't win advantage in international trade through colonies, the only way is trade agreements which always involve give and take. You can be a loser stuck at home or have multiple winners making compromises with each other.
China in WTO gave us a forum to directly influence and control China's aggressive trade practices which are no different from what many western nations including US had used before. And btw China's major global entry started with Nixon. It probably helped China have significant stakes in global peace, thus preventing more vietnams and a eventual world war.
