I just want a new 2D HD gorgeous looking Metroid game. Be it in the style of Ori, Ducktales remastered or even the latest Rayman games. Is that really too much to ask? Really?

Dangus Taargus • 7 years ago

Yes.

BreakSlash25 • 7 years ago

Apparently it's as hard as to get a localized version of Mother 3.

Jared Ari • 7 years ago

I haven't played it yet, but... I'm pretty sure that's exactly what AM2R was. Official or not, it exists.

Skias • 7 years ago

It's awesome.

Roager • 7 years ago

More or less. It's not really HD, per se, but it's more modern-looking than Super Metroid or the GBA games, which were the last true 2d Metroids.

Tricerapops • 7 years ago

I'd say Fusion looked better than AM2R.

Roager • 7 years ago

Fusion had a stronger sense of its own style, with the interplay of the X parasites, the construction of the research base, and the artificial climates. Plus some really awesome boss designs. Fusion's great.

But AM2R has higher resolution, smoother animations, glow/blur effects, etc. That's what I meant by "modern-looking."

I always wanted a 2D Metroid for the DS/3DS because I feel the console was perfect for it with the two screens. Easy access to the menu via the bottom touch screen, have the map and any cut scenes being displayed on the top screen. Instant classic if done well.

Dan Adelman • 7 years ago

[Shameless plug warning!] You should try Axiom Verge for Wii U, then! It'll have the map and weapon select on the GamePad and the main game on the TV!

Roager • 7 years ago

They were working on a "Metroid: Dread" for the DS at one point, but it never really came together. I still get a little sad about it sometimes.

Serket • 7 years ago

Same here, the system would've really benefited the game and they could've added more complex mechanics with the additional inputs.
Also, a new F-zero would've been nice, but it apparently was not to be.

Jonathan Holmes • 7 years ago

I think the problem is, like Shinta said, Nintendo's internal studios are not really in a place to make that kind of game right now. Making a really good game with the Metroid formula takes a certain kind of talent and passion.

Of course, Nintendo could hire an outside developer to do it. I think Tom Happ or Konjack would do an amazing job with it. But would Nintendo ever trust a small developer with their IP like that?

The fact that Sega hired someone who had worked on Sonic fan games to help help Sonic Mania gives me hope that this is the way things are headed, but we'll see.

shlevai • 7 years ago

I always hold out hope that they'd do a trial run of that sort of thing. Bring someone like Happ in and have him work with a team and try to make something happen. They should really recognize the passion in their fans when it comes to their games; expecially with the guy who made the Metroid game that they shut down recently. Don't shut them down, hell bring them in with their project, fine tune it abit and make it an official release.

Chack • 7 years ago

Next Level Games already had an idea for an actual, new Metroid game. Nintendo has been great to get new devs to work on their classic franchises to see what new can be done. We have Retro Studios, Next Level themselves with Luigi's Mansion, Project Sora, etc.

Sadly, I think Federation Force might not sell good enough to let NLG develop a true Metroid game and that saddens me to no end.

Ahr Ech • 7 years ago

Between the real Metroid Prime games and Donkey Kong Country Returns, I feel like Retro always has been and continues to be the best studio for the job. I hope they get to come back to the series someday.

Le Pewp • 7 years ago

I nice, clean Shadow Complex look would be fine, too. Just make it!

Electric Reaper • 7 years ago

"Shadow Complex ... Just make it!"

Ahem.

Dogman Thirtyfive • 7 years ago

Shadow Complex really seems like a black sheep in places like the Metroidvania subreddit.

I find the theme boring, but it looks like a decent game. So I'm not sure why...

Nicolas Banegas • 7 years ago

Yes.

iam16bit • 7 years ago

I'd love to see a new main series Metroid but I can also wait until Nintendo's ready to do so. Though Happ makes a good point about the state of the industry and the middle market is dead. Either every game is "AAA" or "Indie" and with out a middle market the industry doesn't have the safety support it needs in case one of those markets fails.

It's a good article except that opening paragraph. Look I get that Trump is in the news but you're really reaching with that comparison. Apples and Oranges man, Apples and Oranges.

Jonathan Holmes • 7 years ago

The Trump thing was just a light goof. I'm surprised people are taking it so seriously.

Occams • 7 years ago

It cracked me up. Trump is a joke so I didn't mind seeing him mentioned in the article.

Acrylix91 • 7 years ago

I thought it was funny enough, but the article really hit it's stride with the boyband stuff.

shlevai • 7 years ago

Maybe because if they want to hear about politics, racial issues or real life bullshit; they'll turn on the news; whereas if they want to relax and read about a hobby, like videogames; they come to sites like this.

Stop trying to mingle the two together, we want videogame articles about videogames; not someone's social commentary on politics, religion, racial tensions etc being tossed in. You do neither justice when you mention them in the same article or try to make it look cute.

Jonathan Holmes • 7 years ago

Did you get annoyed when we recently compared professional wrestlers to game consoles?

It wasn't long ago that Trump was in the squared circle himself, fighting for what he believes in.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Osc • 7 years ago

ppl need to realize that - it was just a bit of a joke. that or ppl need to not take things so seriously.

iam16bit • 7 years ago

Look I understand if that was satire but you've got to keep in mind that satire and sarcasm are very hard to read on the internet. To everyone it came off as if you were seriously trying to compare the two. That and it's also election season and emotions are running high on both sides.

Jonathan Holmes • 7 years ago

It wasn't really satire or sarcasm, but I appreciate what you're saying.

Acrylix91 • 7 years ago

I don't understand how a comparison like that COULD be taken seriously.

Osc • 7 years ago

sometimes it can be, but given the right context you can tell when someone is joking.

long john • 7 years ago

Me too man, cracked me up. Then again, some reactions here remind me of the 15yo girl you mentioned getting all riled up about "fake boy bands".
That's some solid prose my man.

Electric Reaper • 7 years ago

I dunno, I would say publishers like Devolver Digital and Iceberg Interactive make games for the middle market, at least in financial terms.

Tricerapops • 7 years ago

Yeah, and Cyanide. Can't wait for the new Styx, Call of Cthulhu, and Space Hulk.

Dangus Taargus • 7 years ago

Metroid cheated on my uncle, so he told Nintendo not to make another one. Nintendo's a pretty cool guy and best bros with my uncle, even though my uncle can't keep a secret. At the same time, Metroid sorta acted like a ho. Even though Nintendo should be mad at my uncle for not keeping his mouth shut, Nintendo puts his bros before his hoes. That's really all there is to it. You'll see another game as soon as Metroid stops fucking Steve and apologizes to my uncle.

AcidBeard • 7 years ago

But uncle bad touch touched Steve in his no no parts.

Regardless of political stance, it's honestly very cringey of you to bring controversial real-life politics into an article about a Nintendo videogame series.

Keep it to yourself, or make a separate blog about it. I'm here for Metroid.

Jonathan Holmes • 7 years ago

What's controversial about Trump?

CreamyDream69 • 7 years ago

Look man, I'm not trying to shut you down just to be a jerk or anything- but this simply isn't the time and place for this.

It's a video-game website, and it's in our best interest to keep it that way, because that's what we (or at least I) like this site for.

Although I just created an account, I've been lurking on this site for at least two years now. I really like this site, and I like what you do.

Please don't persist, dude.

Jonathan Holmes • 7 years ago

Well thanks for the feedback, CreamyDream69.

Amarq • 7 years ago

By any means, persist. I like it when my critics have personalities.

(slams door, runs away crying)

long john • 7 years ago

Then you know Dtoid was always about dicks. And what's Trump if not a big dong?
Please don't persist dude.

sumoforce • 7 years ago

CreamyDream69 I agree. Came to this site because it was a refuge from all that junk. Just fun, games, etc. It's frustrating when people can't help but inject politics into everything. Drives me nuts then drives me away. Not cool.

Corrodias • 7 years ago

I think if you want to avoid controversial subjects, a site about art is not the place to be.
