Bluetooth’s nickname in Old Norse is “Blátǫnn”. The word “Blá” is sometimes translated as “blue”
but it also means dark or black. It is
most probable that Bluetooth’s teeth were simply in a poor state rather than
having been dyed. I read somewhere about
Vikings being recorded returning to Ireland after their travels with “Blámenn” –
Blue men. Obviously there aren’t any
blue men but again, if “Blá” is taken to mean “dark”, then “dark men” makes
sense as they could have been picked up by the Vikings in north Africa.
