If they are operating, i.e. selling at a loss, then they are a net loser to the state of Illinois, in no way could that be a net positive.

Illinois is exporting the power of 3 plants to other states. 3 plants are not profitable.

Does anyone need an explanation on this? Could it possibly be more obvious....shut those plants down.

Teri • 8 years ago

Nuclear related industries will do anything to keep their money coming into their pockets and pretend renewables aren't capable of supplying enough electricity. (Safely, I might add.) And even China and Japan already know which way the new wind blows. Did you think Abe speaks for all of the investors and people there?

Woohooo! Time for talk is over.( http://news.yahoo.com/shale... ) <-Click it!

>One by one, Japan is turning off the lights at the giant oil-fired power plants that propelled it to the ranks of the world's top industrialized nations. With nuclear power in the doldrums after the Fukushima disaster, it's solar energy that is becoming the
alternative.

Solar power is set to become profitable in Japan as early as this quarter, according to the Japan Renewable Energy Foundation (JREF),
freeing it from the need for government subsidies and making it the last of the G7 economies where the technology has become economically viable.

Japan is now one of the world's four largest markets for solar panels and a large number of power plants are coming on stream, including two giant arrays over water in Kato City and a $1.1 billion solar farm being
built on a salt field in Okayama, both west of Osaka.

"Solar has come of age in Japan and from now on will be replacing imported imported uranium and fossil fuels," said Tomas Kåberger,
executive board chairman of JREF.

"In trying to protect their fossil fuel and nuclear (plants), Japan's electric power companies can only delay developments here," he
said, referring to the 10 regional monopolies that have dominated electricity production since the 1950s.

Japan is retiring nearly 2.4 gigawatts of expensive and polluting oil-fired energy plants by March next year and switching to alternative fuels. Japan's 43 nuclear reactors have been closed in the wake of the 2011 meltdown at the Fukushima power plant after an
earthquake and a tsunami – since then, renewable energy capacity has tripled to 25 gigawatts, with solar accounting for more than 80 percent of that.

Once Japan reaches cost-revenue parity in solar energy, it will mean the technology is commercially viable in all G7 countries and 14 of the G20 economies, according to data from governments, industry and consumer groups.

A crash in the prices of photovoltaic panels and improved technology that harnesses more power from the sun has placed solar on the cusp of a global boom, analysts say, who compare its rise to shale oil.

"Just as shale extraction reconfigured oil and gas, no other technology is closer to transforming power markets than distributed and
utility scale solar," said consultancy Wood Mackenzie, which has a focus on the oil and gas industry.

Oil major Exxon Mobil says that "solar capacity is expected to grow by more than 20 times from 2010 to 2040." Investors are also re-discovering solar, with the global solar index up 40 percent this year, lifting it out of a slump following the 2008/2009 financial crisis........<

This article goes further explaining that solar is already happening and more to come, but by now I think you realize that nuclear is obsolete. :)
Anyway, whose descendents will love being stuck with babysitting deadly waste piles, the ones already sitting on sites all over the globe for 250,000 years? Sigh. I wish them well.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

You know Teri i think some big surprise is going to manifest for the humans using solar to throw off the yoke of usury choking the little guy to death. Nice post.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

Like I told my long haired friend, we dont need to wait for 250,000 years. We can burn actinides like plutonium in special burner reactors like the IFR, which was proven in the 1990s.

Now as for shale, you do realize that when fracking releases gas, it also releases uranium in the shale. So the uranium pieces float to the top and get in the groundwater. All for more cheap gas.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

And Every single one of those so called fixes is not a reality. How and when this is done is moot next to the mess to get to this point now. We all know just how bad reality is and the reality waiting in wait beyond the industry lie-scape.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

No. The fuel recycle was demonstrated in 1994 in Idaho. Get with the times.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Ok ..Times are As tech it's a go then. Big deal. Politically it's as dead as it is where ever they propose one of the stupid things. Dead is the time we live. Any path forward with some silly games like this one will fail. You get with the times.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

Politics and technology never mix. If politicians were given bad juju on automobile, airline or electricity, we would all be in a pre industrial society.

Here are some facts about nuclear energy that you won't hear from the pro-nuclear cult --->
[1] Each nuclear power plant releases dangerous radiation into the air and water during their daily operations. This radiation pollutes the environment from tens to thousands of years.

This radiation has names like:

* Cesium 137, which can cause liver, breast, pancreatic cancers and more; plus heart attacks and heart disease, birth defects, miscarriages...

* Iodine131, which causes Thyroid problems and Thyroid cancer

* Strontium 90, which causes bone cancer

* Tritium, which crosses the placental barrier and causes birth defects

[2] Nuclear power plants also releases large amounts of CO2 and also large amounts of radioactive CARBON-14 which converts
to CO2 in the atmosphere and is detrimental to human health.

[3] Let's not forget the Cancers, Cancer-deaths, and Childhood Leukemias caused by nuclear energy:

Quote from Dr. Ernest Sternglass --->

“…The official measurements carried out by the Office of Radiological Health, and by the government, and the Public Health Service, they measured the radiation doses around the first big reactors in Dresden near Chicago, and they found that indeed there were doses
almost as high as half of the normal background, and according to Dr. Stewart’s finding, that would mean an increase of 40-50% in
childhood cancers and leukemias around the fence of every nuclear plant.”

SOURCE: youtube /watch?v=hN7rcjSnxZs

[4] Let's also not forget Dr. John Gofman's research which stated that approximately 20 nuclear power plants cause an additional 32,000 cancer deaths PER YEAR.

So taking those numbers, the U.S. has 100 power plants in operation, so multiply 32,000 X 5 and that means nuclear energy causes an additional 160,000 cancer deaths per year, using Dr. Gofman's numbers.

[5] Nuclear power plants use massive amounts of water. Each nuclear power plant uses up to 30 MILLION gallons of water PER
HOUR.

[6] Nuclear waste is the largest form of long-term debt any country with nuclear energy will ever have. The cost to store, guard and maintain nuclear waste is INFINITE and will bankrupt every country with it.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

1. Wrong. Industrial made radiation is less than 0.1% of all terrestial radiation, which also includes all the isotopes you mention.
http://www.epa.gov/radiatio...

2. False. The C14 released in reactors is benign. The K40 in your own body is more damaging to cells. But the imune system takes care of it
http://web.ornl.gov/info/re...

3. No proof or evidence of childhood cancers, just antinuke hysteria and media hype
http://link.springer.com/ch...

4. Gofmans work was not validated. The numbers assumed LNT which was not proven for the level of emissions.
http://nucleargreen.blogspo...

5. All steam cycle plants use water.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

6. The entire actinide volume would only fill the 1 yard line to the end zone of a football field. We can burn actinides in burner reactors like IFR

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

To heck with the money issue. What is going to happen AFTER your nice Exelon plant blows up and you all are boo hoo like the folks of Fukushima? I would look farther than the nose on your faces this time, The drums say Illinois beware of potentials you don't fathom.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

This reply shows the ignorance of enenews antinukes. PWRS and BWRs don't blow up. Go beat your drums at your next kumbaya.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

John Candy had a jet boat ride...Suck My Wake was it's name.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...
The men running AtomsForPeace are the fat guy, Suck my wake is the toys they play.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Re-license a BWR for operation long after the fuel used for that operation has rational treatment. Ten years it takes to cool a removed fuel assembly to dry cask. Man HAS to provide 10 years of service to every single reactor running right now. Fukushima is a gargantuan wake up call for those not watching the store the Nuke Nuts are minding.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

If a loss of grid went down right now. Ten years it would take MINIMUM to halt the now running process across all plants in service. Humans would in all probability never get use of that electricity ever again like we all have now if the grid suffers a serious and widespread event and it's use is required to control the near out of control nuclear industry relics..

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

It takes 5 years or less, depending on burnup and power history.

So there.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

No you are not right.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

My doctorate in nuclear engineering says I am correct.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

The safe and prudent will never say five years is enough time to put in cask a used fuel unit. A stupid claim by an ANON-moron-a-saurus about doctorates aside to make stable enough to transfer to dry is a ten year gig seeing as how they use this fuel to extreme hazard levels before removal and the silliness of every moment of after life treatment.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

Have you run the depletion codes? Do you know what a depletion code output says? Cmon thrill me with your nuclear engineering knowledge regarding decay heat modes and discharge burn up.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

In a wide spread loss of electrical service and a ton of scramble to keep this garbage cool enough to avoid it burning the call is not going to be what is this code or that code. Your attack of me is a waste of our time. Using cherry picked data to say all the units involved like say a disaster or something like that is wrong. Five years might be a best case core to cask time but the masses of units outside this coding will have to be continued longer than 9 or 10. The safe disposal of all these fuel units will have to be done saying they all can be chucked into casks in that short of a time is wrong. 400 + places cooling and slowing the fuel they use, At even five years to cask you have ti juggle this stuff a whole lot longer than a diesel can run. Add 400 other pools to run for Five or ten years into the whole plan and one can see the peril man has about his neck.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Funny how all that AtomsForPeace garbage is so tightly meshed into the main population space. Cancer rate and atom development follow a trend. A Bad trend.

Eventually the TROLL/SHILL cuts bait. Moves along. Or is tossed into the street.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

Never attack the core of an issue always attack the person is the troll/shill way.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

How about an explanation for the sixty to eighty day long fires in the basements of tower 1+2? Melted, sculpted bed rock? 1400+ surface temps of the debris pile? We know. We SEE. We Remember and hope. They fear. We rejoice.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

If one were to contemplate the imagery in the movie "Freejack" one can see the predictive programming leading to the events of 9/11. at one point the hero Alex Furlong casts his gaze over down town Manhattan with a view of the Mccandlis office tower.. that tower is an image placed into the mind of the viewer. That image is VERY telling. I think in viewing that single image that the evil men behind 9/11 intended the sears tower to get the same treatment as the World Trade center. The aircraft that went down in Shanksville,PA was intended to hit the other icon tower. The tower put in the movie depicts all sorts of stuff... Beams of..WKW. bathing the tower, the twin towers with one gone in a cloud of smoke, A child at a doorway from darkness to light, A clue to the locale with the design of the Mccandlis tower fascia. The Tow towers were constructed with the final demotion in mind. Those latent charges that pulverized the two towers had to be built into the design. Those charges are STILL in the Sears tower today if i am correct. They cannot be removed. You should have a look at the floor pans of the Sears/Willis tower. Every day thousands walk the floors of that place.
I think the intent was to have THREE cities involved in the attack and some miracle prevented that from being so as to leave HARD and un-removable evidence to remain for discovery. Look for yourself. Prove me wrong. Please.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Or lets say that the WIPP facility has a bad day and it catches on fire and becomes a nuclear industry VOLCANO in New Mexico...What Then Move to south pole and live like an ice cube?

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Every single day a reactor runs the more likely an event will happen. Events and their definition are ALL topics of intentional misdirection. The Common Spent Fuel Storage Unit at Fukushima is an event READY and waiting like a piano on a wire high over the street. How come i never hear a single word like MOVE THE POOL! eh Mr A4P? Perhaps they intend it to burn? Paid much treasure to effect this burn into North Americas air? Questions, Questions a lot of them and damn if they all have real negative consequences.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

And having to endure the death of Mum after one of the AtomsForPeace "EVENTS" can tend to harden and focus a persons search for truth. Seeing several deaths and much upset in the natural world around me in 2012 i can see they have a serious problem on their hands. Why would all this propaganda flowing out of the beast be necessary if it was true? It would be apparent and obvious to most and not require the troll set to march it out and paint it up..But this is a lazy world is it not?

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Fact is just because they have not blown up YET does not mean a great big boom is not coming! The works of man are FAR from perfect and the nuclear plant is a very very good example of danger lurking in many very foreseen ways. You need to shake your head and think A4P before you speak.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

They are getting real good data on your death. They directly kill 110000 persons a year all like "OOOPS" or "This is going to happen" and shuffle you out for the fresh money kill.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

And 2: The whack-daddy good old Godzilla himself Fukushima is here to school ya in the other real bad meat. Otherwise known as the swamp-n-BOOM test.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

You smoke too much pot.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

The next sort of lame attempt is this one...Claim the target is a pot head.

Well lets see Hmmmm .. What are you like twelve? At this level thats moronic dude... first the list is pretty long and the Troll tends to stay with the familiar so AFP is a pot head himself. Why read a list of tags when you can just use the pot head bit. Not a real top player this one. But you all get the idea. Perhaps after my next 12 i will end some more of these.

franz kafka • 8 years ago

Speaking of horror films... I still think that Fukushima may have been blown under cover of a natural event by something like the Stuxnet Virus which blew the Iranian centrifuges.
I mean what would stop the USA from acts of terror and industrial sabotage?
Certainly not morals ethics or human considerations since they have none.
Economic warfare against ALL competitors is (in part) what the Ukrainian fiasco is about and certainly entirely what the NSA and Total Surveillance State are about.
If the CIA could take 100K deaths in Ukraine and greenlighted the Khazar Junta in Kiev for them
how big a moral obstacle would the third nuclear attack on Japan pose?
An attack that would also serve to prepare Japan for the coming US proxy war (disturbance?) on China?

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

With the Quake and Tsunami doing all the real work of that disaster Why would anyone risk getting busted doing it? Not too likely i think. I Could be wrong but i doubt it.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

The disaster was a matter of the placement and design of the plant being put in the area it was. A fool could work out sooner or later one or two of Japans 56 nukes would have an EVENT at the hands of the natural processes the whole lot of them are built upon.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

In both regular and extra-MOXiness

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Ok lets tumble the "many very foreseen ways" Bit from above...In two examples. 1: Twenty six safety systems in reactor unit 4 test,ALL turned OFF, Minimum control rod population never exceed is THIRTY RODS. When it blew there was SIX RODS LEFT in an automated sequence that would have removed them all... it blew a six left. A TEST>!!!<

anonymous droidbot • 8 years ago

BWR absolutely do blow up! YouTube Fukushima reactor #3 and watch for yourself. Nuclear power plants are massive dirty bombs

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Ahh so i am from ENE so i am A dullard then.. Well A4P my comment is smarter than yours at least.
Any nuclear reactor can have a bad day...ANY one at all. Every single stupid reactor is a danger running or not once that fuel is put into the core. Only retarded trolls fail to see the truths of the Atom and it's dangers..

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

Any antinuke that references ENE shows their ignorance.

Alan Reid • 8 years ago

Those reading above you are laughing at you. So I have been sent to end some paid trance dance. Bring it. Now that i have some time to work it. Lets hear the fight get some work. See the ball move down field We all know A4P is going to remain head up A**.......Try to work above at all times and it is dead.

ArchieDebunker • 8 years ago

Ene has fried your brain. Begone bohemian.
