It's amazing how a one-man developer can get this right, but Mojang/4J can't.
I feel like this is the case for a lot of things, and really makes many AAA publishers/developers look bad. PC guys will come up with stuff to fix problems within a week of a game's release, while companies with millions of dollars and hundreds of people on hand take months, or in the case of WB, might not even bother at all.
My left ear really enjoyed this interview.
Eye see what you're saying...
Sorry about the sound problems! Couldn't be helped.
Did you actually enjoy the interview?
Which sucks because im deaf in that ear.
hey! I'm mostly deaf in the OTHER ear. Together, we'd make a swell deaf guy.
But does it have the touch? The power, perhaps?
This game will light our darkest hour. Till all one.
Tom is such a cool dude, hope he finds inspiration for something awesome next
Does it also have the Bono Vox, also of da U2?
Edgin' with the Edge
I'd say it was plain to see he was in love with the genre, as the game itself may as well have been a love letter to all that Nintendo has forgotten about what made Metroid what it is. not a squad based shooter with a soccer mode, not a shitty hodgepodge action/2D/3D mess that turns our protagonist into a twat with daddy issues, but a simple explore the alien world where it's just you and your wits. I'm super thankful that AV was made, and that more is coming, as it is the only metroidvania that really scratches the Metroid itch that I have had and Nintendo keeps dropping the ball on.
I loved it, and I'm glad others did, too. In that vein, I suggest checking out Environmental Station Alpha. It's similarly metroidesque and was released only a month apart from Axiom Verge. 2015 was a good year for fans of this game style.
Note that it can be pretty challenging, and your attacks are short range. If you don't want a Souls-y experience with bosses, the Easy difficulty may be a smoother ride.
I didn't get into ESA, precisely because of the Souls-esque curve.
I can understand that. One of my friends had trouble finding it engaging for the same reason.
Fantastic game. That guy is so freaking talented, I'm crazy jealous.
Good for him. Axiom verge had decently unique upgrades, some of which genuinely surpriced me.
Yeah playing through this right now on the PS4 and it's the best Metroid since Zero Mission in my book. ;) Not to mention the story is not just a rip and gets interestingly weird/creepy.
Sweet, I've been waiting for this to hit WiiU.
I imagine making more Axiom Verge is easier now that he's designed the textures and sound effects, so it's more about simply more of the great level design with a few new effects and weapons tossed in for spice.
A lot easier than starting over from scratch.
The reason we see so many sequels, in a nutshell.
And I do hope this 'path of least resistance' of game development does indeed lead Tom to making a prequel or sequel.
I've come to accept and genuinely love the two possibilities for how the story ended (though not at first), but I'd still really like to see more.
I'm glad it has te' Edge, now all it needs is Bono Vox, out o' te' U2.
I'm very excited to play this on my Wii U, the system it belongs on :p.
Oh man how I love these Holmes' days! Lots of good news!
Hey Holmes I'd love to edit the audio and video of those for you (and the staff) if you'd like, it's my job but I'd do it for free for Dtoid.
Thanks for this!
You're so kind! feel free to drop me an email at jonathan@destructoid.com if you want.
I will! thanks!
I've actually waited so that I can buy this on my Wii U. Will wait just a little bit longer.
Well, I'm sold.
once i am done playing a few key titles, i am going to get rid of the Wii U, i feel that Nintendo has burned me on the console so much so that i honestly don't want to keep it any longer than i have to. though i will keep my Bayonetta game.
I have too many super nes and gameboy advance games to do the same. I never owned a gameboy advance so I am really digging the wii u. Plus, I can't give up Earthbound and Breath of Fire 2. If you do decide to sell it, just make sure you won't regret it because they have cut down production of it and it will eventually end.
Damn right. Im doing the same actually!
The devs of Axiom Verge, one of the few doing the Wii U justice.
Will buy.
I've been largely ignoring my Wii U (in lieu of playing PS1 or all systems) but this would be a nice game to get me back in. I might even finish Star Fox Zero while I'm at it.
I hope it has a price edge over the other versions.
Just beat it on the Vita. I had a lot of fun with it, and would buy a sequel in a heartbeat. I don't know if I will double dip with a Wii-U version, but off TV play does sound very enticing.
Finally, a real Metroid game on a Nintendo console! I haven't been this excited since Fusion!
Still haven't gotten this, and Wii U is by far the most attractive option for me so I probably will pick it up.
he already snuck an homage in with the JUSTIN BAILEY code.
They do that, and they'd sell 5m copies on Wii U.
Maybe.
Off screen play that still allows you to look at your map without having to put the game back on your TV?!
That's better than how Nintendo does it.
Will it be physical release? Would love to have an actual game box for Axiom.
"map display and touch screen item management"
It will take notes and add this to it's game, or it will get the hose again!
