Fox News is the most trusted national news channel. And it’s not that close.

Fox News Channel beats out CNN for America's most trusted cable or broadcast news coverage, and MSNBC lags far behind, even among Democrats, according to new polling done by Quinnipiac University. The poll found 29 percent of people say they trust Fox News' coverage the most, followed by 22 percent for CNN and 10 percent for NBC News and CBS News. Fox News' figures are unsurprising considering its ratings. The channel ended 2014 second only to ESPN in total viewers among all ad-supported basic cable networks. Its "America's Newsroom," "The Five," "Special Report with Bret Baier" and "The O'Reilly Factor" were the most-watched shows in their time slots among all cable stations.

Put simply: Fox News is a ratings juggernaut.

Yes, FNC's numbers are boosted by the fact that 58 percent of Republicans trust it the most; Fox News also has the most trusted coverage among independents with 25 percent.

While Fox News is bolstered by the right, MSNBC doesn't get the same support from the left. The poll found that more Democrats trust CNN (32 percent) and NBC News (15 percent) than MSNBC (14 percent, tied with CBS News).

In 1996, the late, great New York Times columnist William Safire published a column, “Blizzard of lies,” in which he laid out a series of falsehoods by Hillary Rodham Clinton and declared “Americans of all political persuasions are coming to the sad realization that our First Lady — a woman of undoubted talents who was a role model for many in her generation — is a congenital liar.”

Today, Americans of all political stripes are coming to a similar, sad realization about our president. A recent Fox News poll asked Americans “How often does Barack Obama lie to the country on important matters?” Thirty-seven percent said “most of the time,” 24 percent said “some of the time,” and 20 percent said “only now and then.” Just 15% said “never.”

Think about that: 81 percent of Americans believe that Obama lies to them at least “now and then” on “important matters.” That is simply stunning.These Americans are right. The latest evidence came when The Post revealed that on Friday, April 20, 2012, Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan came to White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler with a specific, credible allegation of misconduct by a member of the White House advance team in Cartegena, Colombia.

There aren't a whole ton of surprises here -- conservative talkers are on the far right, while most mainstream media outlets have a slightly left-of-center audience -- but there are a few interesting takeaways here:

1) The most-preferred media outlets of liberals, according to Pew's study, are the New Yorker and Slate.

2) Fox News's viewership is pretty moderate compared to the Hannitys, Limbaughs, Becks and Breitbarts. This is probably because Fox's audience is just so large that it couldn't be relegated to an extreme end of the chart. But even liberals watch Fox.

3) The broadcast stations (NBC, CBS, ABC) and online news sites like Yahoo and Google have a more middle-of-the-road audience than other mainstream media outlets. People who read BuzzFeed, Politico, The Washington Post and The New York Times all tend to be more liberal.

4) MSNBC, despite its reputation as the most liberal cable news network, has a more moderate audience than the four publications mentioned above -- and only a slightly more liberal audience than CNN.

5) About half of the 32 outlets have an audience that pretty clearly leans to the left, while seven have audiences that lean conservative. The rest (including all the broadcast networks) are somewhere near the middle.

That, more than anything else, is a testament to Fox's domination on the political right and American conservatives' distrust of other mainstream media outlets.

The 2014 total daily viewer averages look like this: Fox News: 1,052,000 CNN: 399,000 MSNBC: 347,000 As you can see, Fox News isn’t in danger of being caught anytime soon. And that brings up a good question: if America is really split down the middle the way the polls always show, why is Fox News so much more popular than its liberal-leaning competitors? Is it because liberals don’t watch TV? Is it because Fox News does a better job of delivering some actual news to go with their opinion shows? I think it might be a little of both, but the more important factor may be a simpler one: Fox News is still – many years after its debut – a complete anomaly on television. Nowhere else can conservatives go on the dial to hear intelligent conversations without the usual liberal narrative. Sure, there are a handful of reality shows that feature conservatives, but you’re hardly going to turn on 19 Kids and Counting for a recap of the day’s events. Fox News did something extraordinary and special when they came on the air, and they remain committed to that mission today. Plus, even a liberal would have to admit that Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity are a hell of a lot more entertaining than Al Sharpton and Chris Hayes. And, frankly, Megyn Kelly is a lot easier on the eyes than any of them. Cable news is down in numbers altogether this year, and that trend is probably not going to reverse itself. With more and more people cutting the cord, turning to independent media outlets, and using the Internet for their news, cable in general is probably not long for this world. In the meantime, CNN and MSNBC had better think up a new strategy. “Be less ridiculous” might be a good place to start.

jakenhyde: I disagree I believe the talking/spewing/hateful heads on Fox New's don't get confused with the truth and it's relationship to their out and out hateful lies and garbage opinions(even they can't admit to calling it "new's") The whole cast repeatedly use the catch phrases of the day to try and make it easy for their demographics, who are apparently troubled with creating their own opinions and ideas? It would be difficult to find a small amount of truth in any Fox New's broadcast it's just not necessary for their purposes and it's audience's?

What about those who said there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and non were found. Will they suffer the same fate as Williams?

You are quite right. If the time has come to deal with those who made mistakes in the past (like Brian Williams), it is the time also to deal with those who lied about WMD and people died. They also didn't care about human being lives during Katrina.

I doubt it. They are too big to fail. Besides, many of the 4,500 American troops killed in Iraq were probably Democrats, the 600,000 Iraqis killed, and the two million who had to flee their country, were Muslims, which does not count and, best of all, two trillion dollars were re-distributed successfully to friendly corporations. The whole thing makes perfect sense, if you are a pseudo "conservative" with a major short circuit in your gray mass.

And still people say there is fairness? NBC, bring back Brian Williams to work. His lies didn't cause anyone to lose life. NBC, you are being played by conservatives, the same people who never care to watch your channel. All these is about jealous not even close to envy as all the time they are mentioning on FoxNews Brian has 9 million viewers. What has this to do with his mistakes???

In my opinion, the real reason for Brian's departure involve the problems the Television News industry has in attracting an audience. The days when Walter Cronkite and David Brinkley were household names are gone. In the age of the Kardashians and "Selfies", objective journalism, especially when it entails News, is dead on arrival. To overcome the challenge of an intellectually challenged audience, TV organizations depend on pretty faces, funny anchors, and those considered heroes worthy of adoration by a captive crowd because of who they are rather than what they report. Brian Williams embellished his experience in a war theater to appeal to his audience, and when his claim was exposed as a lie, he was quickly pushed aside and replaced with another talking head.

You miss the point again, the word is TRUST. Those 9 million, trusted that Brain was telling them the truth.
He got caught in his own lie/lies. Why would the audience trust him in the future??? Just like Obama and his continuous lying to Americans, the majority of Americans no longer trust him.
Brian is toast! Probably will stay with NBC in some capacity, but he will be gone from Nightly News. He was ranked the 23rd most trusted person in America, and the suspension dropped to 835(same level as Gene Hackman, Russell Westbrook).
Before the implementation of Obamacare, Obama was 65th(may 2013) of most trusted people in US. Hate to see where he stands now.

If he can embellish his personal experiences, what else is he capable of embellishing??

Brian Williams caused his own demise. NBC ratings have fallen, brought on by giving Williams too much control of the Nightly News. His downfall is not from one embellishment but from several, and probably more to come.
Most normal people see a major flaw in him and are saying to themselves "what else has he lied about."
He won't be back in his time spot.
