well said! I thought it was strange in the article that it was "they choked on the mouse tail" when clearly you can watch videos of kestrels eating mice and the tails hanging out. this article is just poorly made.
what it does prove though, was that the birds were well fed and not wild specimens.
It's more likely it was a ritual to Horus who had the head of a kestrel not Ra the sun God. Fact check your Egyptian deities
In later Egyptian antiquity, Ra and Horus were merged as Ra-Horakhty. This article is about Egypt from 600 BC to 250 AD, a time when Ra was often shown as his sunrise aspect, Horakhty, a falcon-headed deity.
This article humbly offers support as we write our current version of modern mythology. No facts to be holding as if truth. All remains just one thing only: mindful of the past and open to what ever new interpretations might be. What a fascinating hypothesis!
I don't feed her mouse tail either.
Article is right. The kestrel needs to cough-up the pellet before more food is fed. I love my kestrel, her diet is the hardest part of kestrel husbindry. She eats birds, mice and inscets. Pictures on instagram @Glovesqqq
Poor animals. I guess that the ancient Egyptians were just as much "connected" to nature as today's people are. Use and kill.
Sounds horrable. Abusing these amazing animals for selfish reasons. 😡
Thaaaat's nature!
Probably helped to control some of the population, I wouldn't be surprised if they traded these animals with other civilizations for money or sold a few. Can you be mad at monkeys for eating bananas on their days off or using other fellow monkeys to pick out ticks and fleas?
The bird did not choke. The radiograph shows most of the food and the tail of the last rodent clearly in the esophagus, a tube of the digestive system, it is clear of the trachea. A Eurasian Kestrel can easily eat and digest 2 mice and a sparrow. I am a retired ornithologist and a falconer who has handled and trained falcons since 1969. The people making the statements do not understand the bird's anatomy.
