The best thing that anyone can do, no matter how angry a troll like him makes you, is to ignore him. These people thrive on your attention, and answering them just encourages them to continue the trollish behavior. If they can make you lower yourself to their level, even better for them.

But regardless, he is in violation of YOUR rules, why don't your mods do something about him? You rules say no targeted harrassment, no personal attacks, or irrelevant content. Why is it allowed to stand?

Maybe the reality is that Disqus is not supposed to be about discussion but bar room brawling with the lunatics in charge.

First, Clay, I am not working for Disqus. I am a volunteer moderator.
Second, the sites for which you provided links (Thank you for that, BTW) are 3rd-party sites that use the Disqus platform for their comments. That is their only ties to Disqus.
Third: This might reach some of the Admin, but to be sure, I'll shoot it further upward to see if someone from Disqus can look into it.
Fourth: it is possible that his behavior might gain Mr.Holt a global ban, but as I said above ^^^, it might take some time.

Yeah, that doesn't resolve the problem. It simply masks the problem which will eventually rear its ugly head.

It hasn't gone anywhere. I will guarantee I have at least 25 trolling messages in my box come tomorrow morning. He trolled comments of mine from articles that are over a year old and have not been commented on in almost a year. He just doesn't stop.

OUR mods can do nothing, as it is a 3rd-party site. Your concerns have been conveyed to Disqus Admin. That's the best I can do.

I understand what you are saying, but that is not a good idea in this case as I work for a victim's advocacy organization and we use these Pit Bull articles as a part of our educational services. It was recommended by state legislators. Human and animal lives actually depend on this service. It actually is a matter of life and death.

Due to this nature, there can be dozens and dozens of harrassing messages on a daily basis.

I don't think it is so much cannot seem to control but more of a refuse to control.

I would hope your informant was misinformed, but if it is true, it could be a channel owner, whose only link to Disqus is to have a channel here, or mod for someone.

the worst thing so far I've seen him do is turn the picture of an infant killed by a pit bull into a pit bull propaganda meme. I still get angry when I see him and his buddies post it.

I have read through the comments in this discussion, and I must advise everyone that the sites where he is doing all of this are NOT official Disqus sites. They only use the Disqus platform for their comments. I am going to copy the link to this discussion and take it farther up, as this type of thing is not what Disqus approves of.
Please be aware that it may take some time to see any resolution, as Disqus Admin must make their own investigation. If these clear violations of Disqus Basic Rules and Terms of Service are being allowed by the mods on those sites, they could quite possibly lose their Disqus platform until they comply. That is my understanding.

Is Pit Bulls a Disqus channel, or just a third-party site that uses Disqus as a commenting platform? If it is a Disqus channel (a link to it would have been nice), contact the owner of the channel, and complain to them. If it is a 3rd-party site, or the channel owner allows it, there is nothing that can be done, unfortunately.
The practice should not (in a perfect world) be allowed, but if the channel owner or mods allow it, then the only thing that can be done is to start your own channel, and not allow that type of behavior. If a channel starts to lose followers because they are allowing this, then it will not last long.

Here is a sample from another current article. I would just like to mention that Terry will search for disqus articles that are very old and it is nothing to suddenly find dozens of insulting and personal comments from him in one's inbox on articles that are over a year old.

Maybe you are right Mary Ann, maybe we should just delete our accounts. It would be different if you could block them from commenting against your comments. I could not care less if he commented on his own. It is the relentless harassment, stalking, personal attacks, and the incessant babbling, not to mention polluting my email with his garbage.

Edit: I looked at both articles, and I could see no comments on the first one (PBS), but I saw plenty on the second. The best thing to do would to not be drawn into any converse with this person. He (if it is not actually a woman masquerading as a man online) needs to be totally ignored. These trolls thrive on the attention. If they don't get it, they'll eventually get tired and leave.

One thing I did notice was, although only one of his comments was on hold for moderator approval, there were several other people who had their comments deleted, but none of his were. That is strange. There was one comment (at least) where you, Clay< lowered yourself to his level, which was just what these people like to have people do. Ignore him. Maybe he'll go away.

Oh, it's a guy named terry holt from Australia. Just google "terry holt pit bull" and you'll see who that guy is.

Not only is he on all the time with Disqus, he also runs some harassment blogs with other pit bull "advocates". There are even some photos of him running around the internet and well, lets just say he's not a pretty man and I'll leave it at that.

What I've found out over the years is that pit bull "advocates" are good at manipulating systems such as Youtube, Facebook and Disqus. So when you say you're surprised someone else's comments were deleted but not his, I know you're not aware of the strategy they use. When that doesn't work to their satisfaction they begin personally attacking people and sometimes even preemptively. This is especially true for pit bull attack victims.

This goes way beyond Disqus. This is only a small fraction of the problem.

I personally have no gripe with pit bulls. I've known some that were as nice as can be, and others that were not to be trusted. I put that completely on their owner(s), and how they were raised. I'm leery of German Shepherds, though, as my brother and I nearly had our throats tore out when we were much younger. In that case, it was not completely the dog's fault. Be that as it may, although I don't mind pit bulls, I think that someone as fanatical as he seems to be is carrying things a bit too far, just as many PETA members and anti-abortionists, for a couple of examples. To me, they're nothing but terrorists.

I have seen him target people who the article is about that were attacked by Pit Bulls. It was awful.
