Did death catch Mr. Skeffington by surprise at age 73 ? We are always reading about Americans living longer, and who has a better chance at it than the still healthy, wealthy, and wise ? Wise ? Just an existential reflection here: if Mr. Skeffington knew that his time was truly running out , would he have devoted it to one more BIG DEAL ? Thorton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize winning play " Our Town " is still haunting with the message that " only saints " think very deeply about the beauty and meaning of life -before it is too late.
At least traditional religious faith was always an antidote to our inner All-American philistine.Dominus Vobiscum !
