More to come with the growth of internet as medium for working..... people can be 'normal' for a few days, but not forever ;)

Jake Applebaum raped me when I was in the fourth grade. Down in the basement of the McMartin Pre-School.

Whoops, I'm dealing with my repressed, or rediscovered, or implanted memories. Of something that never happened.

I am amazed by the paroxysm of sudden revelations about Jake the Rapist. And yet there are no actual, concrete, well-described cases of actual rape. Someone was offended that Jake dissed them, some woman (I hope it was a woman) describes how she agreed to sit in a bathtub in just her panties and a t-shirt, while being drunk, and she felt uncomfortable later. Another person says she slept in Jake's bed for many days, "as a friend," but then discovered some amorous advances. Another says that she, as a widow, had a conversation interrupted by Jake and so feels violated.

Look, I've never met Jake. He came of age after the main years of my Cypherpunk involvement. Our paths never crossed. I was last on a flying machine in 2000....I don't do the Hacker or Activist circuit. And not only have we never met, he's been pretty critical of me (in Andy's own book, "Because May is a fucking racist.")

Some other friends, who know both of us, say it'd be fun if we someday meet each other. I have no objections. (So long has he doesn't rape me.)

But I find it really strange that all of a sudden a bunch of anonymous or pseudonymous claims have been made that Jake is a charismatic, powerful personality who victimizes people through his seductive powers. Gee, we should all be so lucky! (I'll admit that when I used to give some public talks, on the alpha particle thing when I was at Intel, and then on crypto anarchy topics in Monte Carlo in 1995, for example, this is about the only time where I had women I'd never met before come up to me and flirt. It happened to Phil Zimmerman, to Julian Assange, presumably in spades to Snowden were he ever free to move freely to flirt, and apparently to Jake. This is a sex-power thing as old as humanity.)

I've seen nothing that rises to any reasonable level of rape. Just some accusations of what a dominant personality might do in similar circumstances (it happens all the time). Any reasonable woman (or man) should have no problems with dealing with such dominant people. Hell, I've dealt with a lot of strong personalities, even some dykey women, and a bunch of real geniuses (Feynman, Gordon Moore, many of the Cypherpunks) and I never felt I had to cower and mew about how I was dominated and raped.

The rhetoric about warning people of--absent actual physical rape--the magnetic power of people like Assange, Manning (well, scratch that one), Appelbaum, and whomever, is just nonsense. And smacks of a witch-hunt.

If anybody needs a warning about not getting into a bathtub with a nude guy in just panties and a t-shirt...well....

I'm not fishing for evidence one way or another against or for Jake. I just find the whole thing very, very strange. I though this past month had been strange enough with Theranos and Craig Wright, but this is in many ways even stranger. And maybe more tragic.

From what little "evidence" I've seen, this whole thing smacks of the Duke Lacrosse Team case, the UVA rape case, and the McMartin Pre-School case.

Very strange. "So, Tim, you endorse rape of underaged girls?"

I consider myself a feminist but anonymous allegations unreported to any law enforcement agency are simply insufficient in this instance. Anyone who is seriously concerned about internet privacy and the future of Tor must acknowledge the vast sums of money and manpower being extended by the U.S. and other governments to disrupt it. We know for a fact that this disruption is ongoing on a technical level, so to presume that it isn't happening at the community level (which, if it were taking place, would look pretty much exactly like this) is quite naive.

Does this mean that open-source projects should tolerate rapists in their midst? Absolutely not. But this is a serious allegation that requires serious proof beyond simply "trust me I know a guy." That might be sufficient for a number of other circumstances or organizations, but given the importance of Tor and its context it's very troubling how the decision was made by the Tor project.

Well said.

Well the feminist narrative seems to be that women who claim rape/abuse should be believed by default, at least that's what many of the most visible and public feminists are claiming. Might be a good time to reconsider the label you've assumed for yourself or even reconsider using a label at all since they often do little more than open you up to being misrepresented by vocal extremists.

I agree, but to make one note you need to acknowledge that women also commit rape. In fact we have an epidemic in public schools of female teachers raping boys, but this is largely ignored by the mainstream media.

A bunch of outlaw anti-establishment hackers now want police protection?

MustBeSaid • 7 years ago

So you're suggesting that the only two options are to blindly take whatever the establishment gives you, without question, or be willing to accept total lawlessness? Seems like a false dichotomy.

I wish there were a law that gave false accuser a mandatory minimum of 10 years

The US Government is the single leading funder of the Tor Project. And just as they have intententionally and maliciously framed other true Americans such as NSA whistleblowers Bill Benney, Thomas Drake, etc, with false charges, here we see the same again. Truth-tellers under attack! There is NO doubt in my mind Jacob is innocent. This is the price true-belivers pay these days when fighting Social Injustice. Be it against the NSA, or Vegan activists now labeled terrorists under the Animal Enterprise Terrorist Act. NOTHING will stop us! Stay strong Jacob! "Jury Nullification" is the answer to EVERYTHING! To ending Social Injusctice. It ended Prohibition itself! Look into it! www.fija.org
