In California when trial lawyers want to warn other trial lawyers about a particular "problem" judge, lawyers post comments on TheRobingRoom.com. For example there's a woman judge in L.A. who worked for my law firm when she was in her 20's and 30's. The comments about her conduct as a judge are so pointed, so awful, so consistent with what I saw of her legal work, they are embarrassing to the law firm she used to work for and embarrassing to lawyers who worked there. But TheRobingRoom.com warns other lawyers about what she's like as a judge and there's nothing we can do about "the truth".

Some lawyers will tell their client when they are stuck with a "bad judge". The lawyers uniformly tell their clients "Don't repeat this." But obviously Donald Trump didn't listen to that sort of admonition from his lawyers to "keep his mouth shut". I guarantee that Trump's lawyers in the lawsuit at issue are dying a thousand deaths because of their client shooting off his mouth publicly.

However, according to at least one comment from a lawyer on July 19, 2014 in TheRobingRoom.com Judge Rolando Curiel is described as follows: "Former prosecutor from Justice and it comes shining through in every single aspect of his rulings. Is an absolute nightmare for Plaintiffs, especially in civil rights cases/issues. He loves government, he loves their lawyers and he will do everything he can to give them the edge. Curiel an absolute disgrace to the federal bench and has NO business being an Article III judge."

That comment was made less than a year ago, in July 2014, says not a word about Judge Curiel's ethnicity, and was written before Donald Trump was running for President. That comment warns lawyers that "This is a problem judge".

Go to TheRobingRoom.com, click on the southern part of California, then pick District Court, Southern, and you'll see the click on box to read that review of Judge Curiel's work as a judge.

That July 2014 comment about Judge Curiel comes from a lawyer who was pretty obviously litigating civil rights cases in Federal court against public employees. Those cases are the kind filed when a law enforcement officer beats the daylights out of a person for no legitimate reason....Not the type of plaintiffs who are typical Trump voters.

So Donald Trump, Republican business man, doesn't like Judge Curiel. And in July 2014 a lawyer representing people asserting their civil rights against government employees warned fellow lawyers that Judge Curiel is a problem judge. That's a very broad spectrum of opinion givers who reach the same conclusion.

Sadly, when you're litigating in Federal court it's basically impossible to get rid of a "problem" Federal judge.

So as early as July 2014 lawyers whose cases are assigned to Judge Curiel were warned on TheRobingRoom.com "bad judge", and that has absolutely nothing to do with Judge Curiel's last name, ethnicity, where he was born, where his parents were born, or what political or social groups he is a member of.

"But it isn’t as if he is — he is. That’s the point. It’s revealing who he is. This isn’t some gaffe or accident. He had ample opportunity over the weekend to retract, to soften, to move away. Instead he doubled down. He widened the net of “non-Americans” – people who aren’t impartial because of their ethnicity – beyond the Mexican-Americans to now include Muslims."

Charles Krauthammer. http://www.nationalreview.c...

With Trump's bigotry now confirmed beyond doubt, how could any decent American vote for him?

witcher89 • 7 years ago

He get's called by his last name, but somehow Donald seems more fitting.

witcher89 • 7 years ago

Donald is basically "that crazy uncle" except he comes from money.
I hope our nation passes our intelligence test this November.

ChuSez • 7 years ago

Typical Trump, make a bigoted, outrageous statement and then double down with even more bigotry and stupidity.

Donald, we get it, you're a bigoted lout.

Case closed.

from the nyt-
"In 2001, Sonia Sotomayor, an appeals court judge, gave a speech declaring that the ethnicity and sex of a judge “may and will make a difference in our judging."

trumps wife is a legal immigrant and his daughter is jewish......plus, he employs tons of people of all races/religions. so you point is what, a misconstrued criticism of a judge means he hates all mexicans?
oh, my gf is black and a legal immigrant too.

Do you think that will work?

It's pretty ironic that the original 'Birther of a Nation' is worried that a judge might be biased against him when the history of the American legal system is rich white men like Trump being biased against the poor, people of color and women. Rather than reconsider offending a broad swath of the American public, Trump's thinking is to simply not have anyone who he's made stereotypical remarks about in a position to judge him. A whole new take on 'judge not lest ye be judged'. I guess we know who he won't be nominating to SCOTUS - women, non-whites, people who think that adultery is a sin, et al. Or in the words of Rubio, "someone who doesn't look like" Trump.

ChuSez • 7 years ago

"Birther of a Nation" I like that. Consider it stolen!

GoGo Juice • 7 years ago

The facts according to Trump change with the audience and what he happens to be 'selling' at the moment. On the campaign trail he boasts "I love that sign...Latinos for Trump...I love the Latinos......We're doing very very well with Latinos", but at other times when it's beneficial to 'The Don' he admits Hispanics have plenty of reason to be prejudiced against him. This guy is running out of sides of his mouth to talk out of.

ChuSez • 7 years ago

He's a pathological liar, he can't help himself. Worst that Bill Clinton if you can imagine that.
He's also the....drum roll....Birther of a Nation!!!

Kim Anderson • 7 years ago

Which is why he's opted to talk out of a different part of his anatomy LOL

ChuSez • 7 years ago

Kim's on a roll!

Jasonn Vincent • 7 years ago

I think you are missing Trump's point regarding the judge. The issue isn't that he's of Mexican heritage. He's a member of a local La Raza Lawyers of San Diego, a bunch of political activists. Do a little reading on LA RAZA and then do a Google search on "Reconquista Movement."

The judge should recuse himself from hearing Trump's case.

Jill Ion • 7 years ago

Wrong "La Raza."

Kim Anderson • 7 years ago

So, white supremacists should only go before white judges? Male chauvinists should only go before male judges? Agnostics and atheists should only go before judges who have no religious faith?

annrkeynkoz • 7 years ago

Very good point SCOTUS "there are five Roman Catholics currently serving on the court (Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, John Roberts, Sonia Sotomayor, and Clarence Thomas) and three Jews (Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Elena Kagen)."...lol No scientologist there...lol

annrkeynkoz • 7 years ago

“Reconquista” is the country of Mexico movement to “reconquer” their territories that were seceded to US during the aftermath of Mexican American War of 1800s. That has nothing to do with Chicanos, who are Mexican Americans..lol

Finally the message got through. Thanks. Likely NPR may delete your post.

Andrew Kerber • 7 years ago

Gee this is sounding more and more like 'the 80's called - they want their foreign policy back.' First we find the judges firm received $675000 from the clinton foundation, now this. http://conservativetribune....

Its not really surprising though, NPR has been in Hillary's pocket for years.

annrkeynkoz • 7 years ago

“La Raza” was an offshoot or afterthought of “the Chicano Movement of the 1960s, also called the Chicano Civil Rights Movement or El Movimiento, was a civil rights movement extending the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s with the stated goal of achieving Mexican American empowerment.” for those who don't read books, there's a wiki on this subject. Don't confuse “the movement” to “la raza” the street gang....lol

X4712 • 7 years ago

Question: was it the judge who filed this fraud case against Mr. Trump?

Andrew Kerber • 7 years ago

It was the judge who gave it class action status.

X4712 • 7 years ago

It was filed that way - and judges do not file lawsuits. They preside over their adjudication.

ChuSez • 7 years ago

"the judges firm received $675000 from the clinton foundation"

Got a cite for that rather dubious claim?

Andrew Kerber • 7 years ago

Ok, so original reports werent quite right. The judge appointed plaintiffs lawyers who gave 675000 to the clinton campaign. The judge is also a member of La Raza. Thats not exactly exculpatory. http://spectator.org/rigged...

ChuSez • 7 years ago

You do realize that there are many groups with La Raza in their name, not just the National Council of La Raza in DC?
The group the Judge belongs to is a non partisan lawyers group in San Diego.

Andrew Kerber • 7 years ago

Right. They have a name called La Raza because they are not remotely racist and dont support the National Organization. I suppose some people might believe that, in some fantasy world.

Jill Ion • 7 years ago

Oh, for crying out loud.

ChuSez • 7 years ago

His ignorance is unshakable.

ChuSez • 7 years ago

You have no proof that La Raza Lawyer's Association of San Diego is a racist organization because there isn't any.
To assert that they are racist is simply a lie.

Andrew Kerber • 7 years ago

La Raza is a racist organization. Its a well known fact.

X4712 • 7 years ago

There are several organizations with the term La Raza in the name. Which one are you referring to - specifically? And how - precisely - are they "racist"?
Do you have anything substantive - beyond your own claim - to support that characterization?

ChuSez • 7 years ago

Enlighten yourself

"The Dishonest Attempt to Associate Gonzalo Curiel with “La Raza”"

"Anyway, in addition to Trump’s overtly racist attack on Curiel, in which Trump explicitly said that Curiel cannot be trusted to rule fairly on any case involving Trump or any of his companies solely on the basis of his Mexican heritage, both Trump and certain lazy/dishonest conservative bloggers have attempted to affiliate Curiel with “La Raza.”

What they are attempting to do is associate Curiel with the National Council of La Raza, the radical left-wing and pro-illegal-immigration group that has gained significant notoriety in the news over the years as a group that is both anti-American and open to fomenting violent pro-immigration protests.

Curiel, however, has no affiliation with this group whatsoever. He is a member of La Raza Lawyers of California – aka the Latino Bar Association of California. They have absolutely no affiliation with National Council of La Raza."
