Beating nimble start ups requires the large enterprises to incorporate innovation as a mainstream event and as they grow and become more bureaucratic this capacity is reduced. That is why they buy them out.
Survival in the global village will only be achieved by governments investing in sound state education systems, and by companies investing in innovation and creativity to produce new products to meet customer demands, investing in new plant to improve productivity and competitiveness and, importantly, investing in
training people to improve customer services and internal processes and
procedures.
However, there has been little or no improvement in productivity and competitiveness in UK for the last two decades indeed selling off British utility providers and major industrial companies has led to the loss of jobs and employment opportunities especially in manufacturing. Any supposed economic growth was achieved through globalization, shifting jobs and employment opportunities abroad, outsourcing and off-shoring, to countries with cheaper overheads and labour costs; and, a considerable increase in imports, products and foodstuffs, to meet the demands of a rapidly expanded population and leading to a balance of trade that dropped into deficit in 1986. Since 1998, the UK has run a consistent annual trade deficit mainly due to an increase in demand by consumers for manufactured goods, a considerable decline in industry and manufacturing, a drop in GDP and growth, and a reduction in oil and gas production; and the largest trade deficits are with Germany, China, Hong Kong, Norway and the Netherlands. Who suggested manufacturing is not important?
Globally, the information technology sector, computers, mobile phones, desktops and laptops, has grown rapidly over the last 30 years and incremental improvements have been made to radio communications and telecommunications equipment, systems and networks especially over the last two decades. But, there has been little or nothing new in, for example, road, rail and air transport systems; the Japanese high-speed Shinkansen is now some 50 years old although it has been improved and uprated, and, the Japanese appear to be ahead of the game in this area, likewise the French Trans Grande Vitesse has improved connections between major towns and cities; and, improvements to air travel has consisted of reducing the weight of aircraft and designing more efficient engine plants.
In the energy sector, apart from attempts to rely on the wind and the sun to meet the increasing demand for power supplies, we have yet to find reliable, efficient
and importantly environmentally friendly forms of generating electricity; and, only some progress in drug production in medical and health systems and equipment to deal with major diseases although the last few years have seen concerted efforts to deal with rapidly developing diseased in parts of Africa, but, Ischemic heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections and chronic obstructive lung disease are still the major killers of humans, and, reportedly, there are some 300 million reported cases of malaria world-wide, and of the 700,000 who die most are under 5 years of age. So, there is still a great deal to do.
