My Dell notebook is about that size and it only cost me $399 in 2010 if cellphone get any bigger and cost more you might well get you nice used car for your teenage child that way they can fix it up the way they want it

I'll wait until the technology finds its way down to cheap Samsung Galaxy models, and then until those are available as refurbs. I'm on my 5th Samsung Galaxy model (Century > Stardust > Core Prime > Luna Pro > Orbit), and I've never paid more than $50, usually $35-40.

And how long will it take before the Chinese 'COPY' or 'STEAL' the design of this Samsung phone?

bambookane • 4 years ago

I see the Galaxy Ford online right now for near $6000, so this is a steel. No mention of pie from dealer however.

Let me know when it cost $20 til then I'll pass!

Over-priced junk and loaded with spyware. No thanks.

I'm gonna hold out for the "quadruple fold". (Think of an 8x11 inch sheet of paper folded twice and then unfolded)

Unfolds twice to reveal a screen 4 times the size of the closed/unopened device. That will be the one that approaches REAL tablet size or perhaps laptop size.

The will be the 'holy grail' of computing devices.

BTW, I'm claiming IP patent on that idea, so watch out MS and Google and Apple..

That might actually be something we see in the future, but it takes companies like Samsung developing products to get us to that point .I get it that the Fold is not for most people, but it is a well made and fully functional device that should be applauded for existing.

Lets complain about the Crapware that AT&T puts on the phone but not mention the PILE of apps that Samsung puts on the phone. Samsung apps most of them can not be removed or disabled or if they are it breaks usability of the device. I will never buy another Samsung piece of hardware until I can remove all none critical (drivers) for a device. Want a list, Galaxy store, Galaxy themes, Samsung account storage, Internet, Pass, Time Zone Data and the horrible Game Launcher. I am sure I am missing some but that is a good start. Lets not forget the Bixby button on some devices that might be able to be turned off but only after registering a Samsung account.

Price = Major Fail (to be honest, mostly because I can’t afford it)
Size, Bulk = Fail As much as possible I walk about in shorts or Jeans. No place to keep that big honking thing comfortably, let alone safely.
Weight = I could live with, except for the fact that any shirt with a breast pocket big enough to accommodate that monster will sag and droop horribly on one side.
Usability = Away from home my smartphone does anything I need/want it to do away from home. At home I just as soon kick back in my recliner and enjoy using a rather large tablet. Now there’s a screen.
The short of it: They can improve it all they can/want. They can drop the price all they want. I’ll never own anything like it.

The Galaxy fold is an answer to a question never asked. It's not revolutionary nor is it that exciting. The price, the cumbersome nature of it, are two major points I don't care for. This year seems to be a mess of phones, ugly designs, and half baked designs. I'm looking forward to the Pixel 4, but not holding my breath. One Plus 8, Samsung 11, and others are what I am looking forward too. Try again. Harder.

Is there a video review on this article? All I;m seeing is an unending stream of 30 second commercials !

jfreedle2 • 4 years ago

It has already been proven, unscientificly but still valid, that the device will not last, and for something that costs close to $2,000, it should last more than a couple of years. The Galaxy Fold represents not a revisionary device, more of an evolutionary device. Having observed the mobile technology for over thirty years, I can say that the Samsung Fold is a gambit, and a sloppy gambit at that, to something that may exist in the future. There are much better smartphones that have been announced this year and they will last ten times longer than the Samsung Galaxy Fold. I see the Samsung Galaxy Fold as yet another failure produced by Samsung.

The … "Holy Grail of One Device" Really?

There are undoubtedly millions of people already "getting by" on One Device -- and this is a very interesting device (if the foldable screen can live up to the hype -- frankly, I am skeptical). Anyway, there is no silver bullet. No one device which will meet everyone's needs. Never has been, never will be!

The more interesting question is whether this interesting new device will be able to hold it's own up against the Surface Duo when it comes out a year from now. By then, this device will be well established and the Surface Duo (a collaboration between MS & Google) will be an interesting challenger.

If you ask me, the cons outweigh the pros. Personally, I don't expect any unit to survive regular daily use for even one year, making it massively too expensive as a throwaway device.

gsvanwinkle • 4 years ago

For me, each of the 4 "cons" listed at the beginning of the article are show stoppers. When you put all 4 of them on the same phone, there is just no way I'm going to shell out $2K for such a fragile phone.

highlowsel • 4 years ago

Thanks for the review but $2K for a phone? Yeah...well....no.

Matt: thanks for the great and thorough review of this exciting device.

Thanks, this wad just my first impressions :) Stay tuned for more.

Hmm. About that - "I'm sure I will be ridiculed for driving eight hours to purchase this nearly $2,000 phone, but it was in stock, and I did save a bit on sales tax" - statement.

Far be it that I should ridicule a fellow tech geek (grin), but saving a little on sales tax probably didn't offset the cost of gasoline used for that 8 hour round trip. (I'm guessing at least $60 dollars in fuel costs). Nor the added cost of "liquid and munchies" everyone purchases for long car trips.

Still, I am very curious as to its long term "survivability" - ESPECIALLY - since you have already pre-doomed that poor unsuspecting Galaxy Fold with that "I baby my phones and rarely drop them, never using the Apple Care+ service ..." jinx of a statement. Very Big Grin.

Mr_Adams • 4 years ago

so, aside from folding open and closed, what does it do that a $500 android won't do?

It's really not about comparing to lower cost devices. It's a technology demonstration of the future of mobile tech. It truly may be able to serve as a phone and a small tablet, which no Android can currently do. This isn't for the masses and I'm not trying to convince ANYONE to buy it.

Rann Xeroxx • 4 years ago

I am looking forward to.... a few years from now when these are mid to lower tier and I can pick one up for $200. Till then, I just read the articles.

Actually I am very interested in the Microsoft dual screen device rumored to be coming out soon.
