Hopefully, Google is just planning on putting a much better stock android recovery in, negating the need for adb backups. Just a thought.

sb057 • 5 years ago

lol, talk about wishful thinking

SamwiseStenner • 5 years ago

Ironic considering stock recovery does what most people need anyway. The few critical remaining things that need backing up aren't exactly far fetched, considering 90% of the process is already there.

cpufrost • 5 years ago

Why don't they keep going, it will be just like iOS.

tech3475 • 5 years ago

iOS allows for easy backup/restore/device changes via itunes.

So this move will make an already poor in comparison area of Android even worse.

mirhl • 4 years ago

itunes and easy hardly can fit in the same sentence.

tech3475 • 4 years ago

Well they can in this case.

Momomo • 4 years ago

Eh... he kind of has a point, if you have multiple phones, Itunes will not allow you to sync multiple to the same computer - which is ridiculous if you ask me. In what world does a household have as many computers as they do phones and tablets combined?

tech3475 • 4 years ago

Unless I'm misinterpreting your post, you can sync multiple phones/tablets on the same computer.

Done it myself.

rusty.gh • 5 years ago

I'm sure they "google" will claim it's for security. However, we know that it's really so you use more of their online cloud and their backup, so they can filter through all your stuff to send you more ads. Just like the clipboard being taken away from third party apps or background monitoring, they say safety, but it's just so they can feed that data through their keyboard and monitor that data as well.

Cancer Man • 5 years ago

I feel sorry for people without root. Drive backup is totall trash, once it restored data of SYSTEMUI on different phone and I couldn't open quick settings cause it kept crashing...

The Restless Soul • 4 years ago

Huawei backup is neat imo

Cancer Man • 4 years ago

Oneplus and Samsung have some solutions as well which are able to restore app data. This is just another "Google knows better" thing, They don't give any control over backups, if you want to use automatic restoration it's all or none (My old Nexus used to restore system settings from OPO, making my quick settings force close), or randomly delete data after 2 months with even informing.

The Restless Soul • 4 years ago

Google is becoming the next Apple. That's why i want a new os from Huawei. I know very well that they are still developing it so then Google will stop becoming so restrictive

Anonymously_Unknown • 5 years ago

Was there a reason mentioned for the possible removal of this useful feature?

Techamazon • 5 years ago

Say you find an exploit to bypass encryption while doing a data "backup". There's a reason overlays and other accessibility features are being pulled as well unless reasons. It's the same thing with stopping people from downgrading to stop theft because you're just stuck with a brick. Obviously you can just sell it for parts but that's another story altogether.

You can mostly blame phishing for these issues but it's not like that's going away anytime soon. The majority of people sees data as being more important than hardware (because insurance companies exist) because data recovery isn't always possible, especially if your device gets lost/stolen as mentioned above.

culiacanazo • 5 years ago

No no no no and no! Open your eyes!!!!!!!! Damn it! https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

culiacanazo • 5 years ago

They didn't say, but you can bet there isi! Look at my answer below.

scandiun • 5 years ago

I guess if Google plans to remove adb backup and restore with android 10. It looks too soon for me, because the backup and restore methods used currently suck.

CyanogenLover • 5 years ago
The Restless Soul • 5 years ago

Google is really pushing me to IOS.
First the remove the overlay thing that didn't require root on Pie, now this? If they break shit on android Q, i am going to Iphone.

antonio cesar • 5 years ago

While i understand and your point is still somewhat valid, iOS never had any overlay system in the first place, so the first one pushing you to it doesnt make sense

The Restless Soul • 4 years ago

Wait until android Q releases, then tell me what they are doing so far. I bet that in the upcoming android releases it will become a Ios-wannabe. Heck, they are forcing pixel users to use an iphone x gesture based system without giving options to change it at user's will, like how EMUI does
But i guess everybody has to become a copycat since, y'know, apple is the best innovative company in the world and that they do is the best for technology evolution (sarcasm intended)

Zacharee1 • 5 years ago

But if Android removes all the features that give it an edge over iOS, it makes more sense to just use iOS, which tends to be more stable than Android.

Aaron • 5 years ago

I have an iPad laying around so every time I imagine iOS is better all I have to do is pick it up and remember it's not.

antonio cesar • 5 years ago

But you do agree that android has gotten better, than for instance, GB right?, albeit slowly,
But at the other side of the coin, google has been removing (slowly) power user features
So, one can draw that as google removes these power user features, android might reach iOs levels of user experience

ssurell • 3 years ago

As far as variable customization potential, every version of Android since GB is progressively worse.

Marc • 4 years ago

I know why my next smartphone will be a Librem Purism 5! FCK ANDRD!

Pipsname • 5 years ago

Is this not just because of A/B profiles and how no one wants to backup both?

Remnant • 5 years ago

adb backup was already inferior to iOS's backup to begin with, and instead of improving it to stay relevant, they opt to remove it completely?

But then again, Google making poor decisions isn't really anything new. I can see myself switching to iOS in the near future.

Azims Lives • 5 years ago

Good, it's unreliable anyways.

g4nj4b4by • 5 years ago

...so...just get an iphone?

jnss98b • 5 years ago

Sure, this makes Android literally unusable, right? I mean, fuck everything. No full ADB backup means no sales. Reeeeeeeeeee, RiGhT?

g4nj4b4by • 5 years ago

everything that was useful in android is now an app by chainfire...this what we ask for?

Marc • 4 years ago

I know why my next smartphone will be a Purism Librem 5!

skynet11 • 5 years ago

There was an adb backup and restore functionality? 😜
