Funny NO " liberal " Democrat serious about running for president ever openly opposes the state death penalty . Our splendid, openly gay Rhode Island Congressman David Cicilline -very much in the news lately as a HATE RUSSIA New McCarthyist - is outspoken over the evil of a death penalty for homosexuality.
Don't expect HER PROGRESSIVENESS Senator Elizabeth Warren to oppose the death penalty or even DEATH en masse in the form of nuclear World War III .

Warren is a Reagan republican.

Patrick is correct: the El Sisi regime is a bloodthirsty tyranny. The tragic history of Egypt and its dictators in the post-WW II period — from King Farouk to Nasser, Sadat, Mubarak, El Sisi — shows the futility and dead-end of national capitalist development. Even the brief interlude of Mohamed Morsi and his Moslem Brotherhood cannot shift Egypt out of this path of deadly decay. Only the program of Permanent Revolution and the world commune can bring progress.
However, for the benefit of readers of WSWS Patrick should have mentioned the main reason that this bloody regime is paid 1.3 Billion annually by the US: the Suez Canal. This money pays for the right-of-way that the US Navy enjoys moving its aircraft carriers and other large ships through the Canal.

The story included the remark that one prisoner said he had been "hung on the door upside down for seven consecutive hours."
It is important that the WSWS be accurate and make sure what it reported is possible. I doubted it and looked up just how long someone could be suspended upside down. What the young man said was well within the limits cited as 20 hours by one source and quite possible and likely in the 8-10 hours cited by another.
Is it possible to die being hung upside down? Yes.
Is it a horrible way to induce pain? .........

"Yes, and it is among one of the methods of torturous executions devised by humans. Though no longer practiced, reverse hanging or inverted hanging, was used to make hanging more torturous.

Hanging as a method of execution is instant, and results in less pain for the executed. But reverse hanging was made more torturous by making the victim turned upright every few hours. This causes the blood to again drop to the feet—which is unpleasant at least and painful at most—and means the victim must again have the sensation of all the blood pooling in his head once he is again upside down. Once left in the inverted position, death is said to occur in 8-10 hours."

The US has propped up various Egyptian autocrats over the last several decades and given over 40 billion $$$$ in aid (read weapons and "security materials") to Egypt since 1979. If the US aid given to Egypt, Saudi Arabia et al were to disappear so would the current "order" throughout the ME.

What the Egyptian people gain from this US aid is arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings. I believe in the corridors of the DC snakepit that's called democracy.

Of course understanding this requires the "unwashed" to redefine our antiquated concept of democracy as not the "rule of the masses" (or some such thing) but as the "benevolent" dictates of hangmen and headchoppers.

In my humble opinion it is just a matter of time the Al Sisi regime faces a new round of revolutionary upheaval. The current conditions in Egypt are by far worse then the uprisings of 2011 that ousted the Mubarak dictatorship. Back then and now the imperialist states that also includes Russia and China viewed the Egyptian regime as bulwark of stability for their economical and geopolitical interests in Middle East and North Africa.

I heard the military is interwoven into the economic fabric of Egypt society. The military is one of the largest land owners in the country. Also owning many other types of businesses. Also it seems the intelligence agencies are buying up media outlets.

The Egyptian society must be 100% overturned .... replaced with total working class control. Anything less is useless.

That is precisely why the military had easily took over after the Mubarak dictatorship.

Charlotte Ruse • 5 years ago

"The military has slaughtered thousands on the streets of Cairo and other cities, jailed and tortured tens of thousands, and is now beginning to accelerate the machinery of execution for hundreds of prisoners it has sentenced to death after proceedings that were nothing more than kangaroo courts. Some 737 people now are under sentence of death, while 51 have exhausted all appeals."

Notice when a ruler brutally slaughters and tortures his own citizenry, there's unanimous "support" by US and other Western Imperialists rather than condemnation, when this ruler is "useful" to these imperialists in securing unilateral hegemony of the Middle East. And also notice, how someone like Maduro is considered a "tyrant" by the these "same" imperialists if he hinders their attempts at securing control of Venezuela's oil and other valuable natural resources.

In other words, a sovereign ruler is only a friend to international imperialists when he's useful and allows them to exploit, plunder, and rob his country.

El-Sisi may have ordered the executions, but it might as well have been Trump, Merkel, and Macron who wrapped the noose around their necks.
