Ted Cruz gets this right :
[“There was a time when journalists covered ‘news.’ The NYT has given up on even pretending anymore. Today, they are Pravda, a propaganda outlet by liberals, for liberals. These remarks at their ‘town hall’ are a scandal & would be a firing offense at any real journalistic outlet,” Cruz wrote.
Cruz continued: “If you care about journalism, or the First Amendt, READ the transcript. The Editor says (in effect) ‘for 2 yrs, we covered ‘Russia, Russia, Russia,’ facts be damned; now we’ll scream ‘racism, racism, racism’ for 18 mos, and the rest of the media follow us.’ That’s not journalism.”]

None of the oh-so-progressive stars of the Democrat Party , Senator Elizabeth Warren , Senator Bernie Sanders will seriously upset the status quo of the Establishment wing of the party.
Instead they will conduct a dirty campaign smearing white working class Americans as Trump's " natural " RACIST , WHITE SUPREMACIST base.
There is nothing " liberal " or " progressive " about their vicious " identity politics " and vacuous " political correctness ". Nor their HATE RUSSIA , New McCarthyism.
There was an excellent article in " The Militant " on August 28, 2017 by one Seth Galinsky condemning this vilification of the white working class. The article was also very critical of the tactics of Anti Fa : " Liberals blame workers who elected Trump " :

[The meritocratic liberals and leftists lay the blame for what had happened on President Trump and workers who voted for him. An Aug. 12 column by Colbert King in the Washington Post was headlined, “These Are Your People, President Trump,” one of many variants in the liberal media that racist and rightist groups are his “base.”

“We have a bigoted billionaire-cum-president who has done precious little for the white working class whose resentment fueled his rise,” wrote Michael Dyson in the Aug. 12 New York Times. “The only remnant of this leadership they have to hold on to is the folklore of white nationalist sentiment, and xenophobic passion, that offer them psychic comfort if little financial stability.” ]

You support a racist, Ronnie.

I will defend anybody against LIES and SMEARS . That is just the catechism of democratic socialism . The real RACISM of President Trump consists not in any imagined affinity for WHITE SUPREMACY but in his uncritical support of the Netanyahu party of Zionist Apartheid Israel. Long ago the United Nations rightfully condemned Zionism as a form of racism.
Oh I forgot all about ignoring " Mean Girl ". Show me an adult Jew who hates capitalism , hates imperialism, hates militarism , hates Zionism, and hates the New Atheism AND I will show you a brother or sister of Radical Ron.
[ Also a Jewish intellectual who hates the FAKE NEWS New York Times.]

Instead of playing musical chairs (the Democratic congressman challenges the Democratic senator, and instead of both of them being reelected to their present seats, the Democrats maybe lose one concress-critter), I do wish the Democrats would enlarge the candidate pool.

Could you elaborate? I don't understand what you're getting at here. It's as if you're lamenting Democrats challenging Democrats in primaries while at the same time demanding that more Democrats challenge Democrats in primaries.
