Warriors coach: NFL using ‘fake patriotism’ to appease Trump

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr on Thursday slammed the National Football League's new policy banning athletes from kneeling during the national anthem, calling it “idiotic” and "fake patriotism."

“They’re basically trying to use the anthem as fake patriotism, nationalism, scaring people,” Kerr told reporters in Houston ahead of a playoff game. “It’s idiotic, but that’s how the NFL has handled their business. I’m proud to be in a league that understands patriotism in America is about free speech, peacefully protesting.

“I think our leadership in the NBA understands that the NFL players were kneeling to protest police brutality, to protest racial inequality,” he added. “They weren’t disrespecting the flag or the military. Our president decided to make it about that and the NFL followed suit and pandered to their fan base.

"People in high places are trying to divide us, divide loyalties and make this about the flag, as if the flag is something other than what it really is,” he said. “It’s a representation of what we’re about — diversity, peaceful protest, right to free speech. It’s really ironic, actually, what the NFL is doing."

While I'm not a Jets fan, they're standing with the players who are protesting the unequal and unjust treatment of African-Americans in our society by saying that the team will pay any fines imposed by the NFL (https://nypost.com/2018/05/.... Will other teams, notably the Pats, follow their lead? I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath.

No NFL team can legally fine or discipline any of its players for failing to participate in a patriotic ritual.

The only thing remarkable about what the Jets did is that they didn't have to make an announcement about it.

He's got to have a team of people working around the clock dreaming up new ways to go even lower than the day before.

Am I missing something? The players are NOT protesting the National Anthem, they simply want justice for black Americans, an even playing field, so to speak - something that is lacking in the “land of the free.” A football field works a lot better than an inner city street corner to promote the cause.

Our clueless president is grandstanding instead of leading the “home of the brave” to a long overdue fruition of “justice for all.”
