Good question. They could not have sold the scrolls to any synagogue in the world because no Gabbai would ever buy a Torah scroll whose origins he doesn't know - scrolls of unknown origins are not kosher.

Remember that other case when three Mohammedans entered a Jerusalem synagogue and murdered praying Jews with axes. The mosques where the murderers came from should have been levelled. All of them, there where they had come from.
