What a prize pratt!!! Maybe if you had shut your gob long enough to listen to the locals you would have seen how friendly they are. I have lived in or around Swad for most of my life although I had a few years living in other counties. No matter where I have lived I have found that people are right with you if you are right with them. Give it a try. You might find someone that actually likes you!

I have lived in Swadlincote all my life, I'm 43 years old and I would NEVER want to live any where else.
Swadlincote was once a thriving town when all the surrounding coal mines were open, but sadly these have now all closed down and so the towns economy has dwindled. It is through no fault of its own that Swadlincote has a large number of unemployed, it's a fact of life now that there are more unemployed in towns than ever before. Employment is much harder to find these days not just for people in Swadlincote but for those in other twins and cities across the UK.

I live in Newhall ! Moved here 4 years ago from Birmingham. Whoever posted this needs to go and live in inner city Birmingham. Its bliss here compared to Birmingham. We had about 2 or 3 knocks on the door from the police every year asking if we had witnessed stabbings, burglaries, or street abuse. Afraid to go down certain streets in Handsworth. You knew they had guns in the area. Chavs and chavvy friends just don't cut it compared to what I have seen !

very interesting information about Swadlincote. I visited there yesterday and was impressed. Some people even said hello first - something that doesn't happen in Derby any more...

Town centre looks tastefully regenerated although a lot of empty units and there is potential with it being so close to Burton for a daily commute to Birmingham for work. Maybe I need to visit a few more times before committing to moving there?
I am just keen to get away from the Audi driving oranged skin brigade that have swamped Darley Abbey, Allestree, Duffield and surrounding areas of Derby...

Hello, chav.

paul • 11 years ago

You are so up yourself you self opinionated and obviously inbred turd,to fit in in Swad and surrounding villages one is required to be sociable and up for a bit of fun,you are obviously a prisoner of an unenviable childhood experience which has made you a sorry excuse for an ameteur journalist.
you Know what us real folk call your sort? Dick eds! you are quite obviously a victim of class, were you bullied at school perhaps or maybe deprived of Mummy and Daddy's attention because of their busy social commitments.
Look at yourself before you judge us REAL people.

I live in Newhall, I love where I live and it's very rare to see "chavs" as you lot like to call them. I am well educated at the William Allitt School and education is IMPORTANT to all students. Alcoholics and Drug addicts are frowned upon and if you were to look in any other location (even London and Oxford) you will find that there are communities which are a lot worse than Swadlincote. Just to be clear - Chavs is the definition for a youth, Many old people live here so that's already incorrect, which doesn't work or is paid very little (New shops and companies are advancing/begging and many jobs have been introduced so very little citizens are out of work - Even though we're in a recession). So, your definition for Swadlincote is incorrect on a massive scale and before you judge my literacy skills - I have used commas before and after the sentence 'Many old people live here so that's already incorrect' because this is a technique called parentheses commas which, instead of using brackets, you use commas.

Can't wait to move back there. It is one of the loveliest and friendliest places I have ever had the pleasure of visiting and would be happy for my children to grow up here.

@Bullethole.
I gotta say it isn't a new thing in Swad, don't blame it just on the ex-pit bonkers. I haven't been there in years, but the last time I was there I was in the Bear (centre of Swad) on NY Eve and, before the pub WAS EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE OPEN, they threw the juke-box through the big window at the front. And I'm talking 30+years ago. Once a sh*t-hole, always a sh*t-hole.

Mind you, was a top night out :)

Lol. Good comment. I used to play football for the Pig in Holmewood (really the Holmewood Hotel but you get the idea).
There are so many stories I could write about that place that I couldn't do it justice in a blog.
They spring cleaned the p;ace once and you could see the line where they got to on the wall. Basically as far as they could reach up without standing on a chair.
We had a disco one Christmas and one of the guys knew a black DJ/bouncer called Wes who DJ'd at a club in Chesterfield. This guy thought he was seriously tough and loved beating young kids up most weekends.
He was booked as the DJ at the pig and strolled in as large as life like he owned the place. I don't think a black guy had ever been in the pub before and a lot of the Holmewood crowd had probably never seen a black guy before, they rarely went outside the village very far. The place went silent when he walked in, like an old Western when the gunslinger walks in. He took one look around at the guys dressed in combat jackets and girls in their "Sunday best" but more tattoos than you see now, realised he had bitten off a bit more than he could chew, turned on his heel and went home.
Another occasion we were in the pub, talking about a rolling stones tour where Mick Jagger had thrown a bucket of water over the crowd. One of the locals piped up " He wouldn't have got away with that in't Pig" never dawned on him that maybe the Rolling Stones were playing slightly bigger venues like Madison Square Gardens at the time.

Newhall, Midway, Swad, Woodville, Gresleys, they are all the same 'chavtropolis'. Don't be to hard on the town as after the closure of the Collieries had a massive impact on the younger 80s/90s generation and forced them to say 'f**k it' because they saw their parents/grandparents be stuffed over, get a shed load of compensation and "blow it on a new car and a holiday in Tenerife for the family".

Having said that the people are sound, well, most of them apart from the thugoidal knuckle draggers that continue to see violence as a form of communication. But, as in all walks of life, these numpty's exist everywhere.

I admit it has a crime and drug problem, however, I love the place. I really do. Not least the people. I wouldn't be here today if weren't for them. They take you as they find you and if you do the same you will have no problem.

I lived there for 10 years. Swad is banging, however, classic rock or 'banging' happy hardcore must be one of your musical choices.

:D
