The situation is now a lot worse than reported. The MCA decided after inspection that 5 of the 6 ships operated by CMV should be detained . The investigation began after a death of a crew member earlier in the week at Tilbury, there had been a previous suicide in May. The crew claims not to have been paid since April, it appears many have been on board for over a year which is a breach of the Maritime Labour Convention and many had expired contracts of employment.
It is reported that the crew have been begging to be repatriated to India but CMV/Global claimed that it was not possible. The Astoria, Astor, Colombus and Vasco de Gama at Tilbury have all been detained. The Marco Polo at Bristol has also been detained following its inspection so the only ship left is the Magellan.....
