Thomas and John Mason Cook must be spinning in their graves. Thomas Cook was the world's first package tour operator. Is Fankhauser now saying that TC is going to abandon that heritage and instead offer an online holiday marketplace? The market is already saturated with big, long established online digital travel market suppliers such as lastminute, Expedia, Travel Republic and On the Beach (which let you design your own holiday with flights, accommodation and transfers). Has TC given up the battle against TUI (no.1) and Jet 2 (no.2) package holiday operators in the UK? TC will no longer be vertically integrated if it sells off its airline. One wonders where the sense is in doing this!
Thomas and John Mason Cook must be turning in their graves! What about TC heritage of being the world's first package holiday operator? So Fankhauser is basically saying that TC will no longer compete with TUI (no.1) and Jet2 (no. 2) package holiday operators in the UK? He will find that the digital travel marketplace (design your own holiday) is already crowded with big long established beasts such as Lastminute, Expedia, Travel Republic, Trivago and On the Beach. TC's near fatal error was buying another chain of travel agents a few years ago (Co-op) when it should have invested its millions in online digital media distribution channels.
