This discussion reminds me of a conversation I used to have with my co-directors, when I was responsible for Sales & Marketing at one of the Saatchi Group companies. Some of them, and more often members of their departments, used to complain about the difficulty of servicing clients. I used to respond: "you should try not having clients and see what that feels like".
I'm tempted to say to those locals who complain about "overtourism" that you should try not having tourists!
The reality is that tourism hotspots are very fortunate to be popular. Their residents are in control of the environment not their visitors. The path to success is thoughtful, collaborative dialogue between the destinations and the industry.
