Hi Mickey,
The new solar panels and the new batteries now available make it possible and viable to get remote energy from solar alone. Costs this year of new Super Capacity batteries and new Solar PV cells and system management make it cheaper and more reliable to use solar and batteries than generators by far. It is clearly more ecologically friendly.

Solar power is fine when the sun shines, but when you have five consecutive days of overcast weather, as we are experiencing over a large part of South Africa at the moment, a backup power source is essential. Under overcast weather, the output of a solar PV system drops by 70-80%. It is very wise to retain the diesel generator for these conditions. Batteries will not carry a system over long periods of overcast weather.
