MikroTik wAP LoRa8 is IP54. How is outdoor performance (rain..)? I hav received the unit, and it doesn´t look like too much waterproof..

Thanks for the review!

Do you have any option to measure the power consumption in "stand by"?

One question. Is it possible to config via Ethernet (ssh.ie) and get internet connection via Wifi? All the documents refers to Ethernet to get internet.

Xose Pérez • 5 years ago

You can configure it however you want. You basically have a powerful router with a LoRa concentrator module. The RouterOS is quite flexible and offers a lot of options.

How we can do it ?

Ignacio García Pérez • 5 years ago

I have five of these working, although I had to buy the components separately (wAP R + LoRa miniPCI + SMA pigtail + external antenna) since the kit wasn't available yet. Just had to update OS and install the lora package.

200€ for an outdoor gateway (including high gain antenna in my case) while the cheapest other one I could find is 700€. Of course it's a game changer, but IMHO the problem was that 700€ is stupidly expensive. Simple outdoor router equipment from the likes of Ubiquity and Mikrotik are well below 100€, and we do know the hardware required for a gateway is also under 100€. Anything over 200€ is overpriced.

Hi Ignacio. Can give us some details about outdoor weather performance? Can rain get inside electronics?
Thanks

Ignacio García Pérez • 5 years ago

The device is specified for outdoor use and definitely the enclosure is designed to not let water in (unless it rains upwards). Granted, it's not one of these beefy aluminium enclosures, but does the job and costs 1/3. No GPS though, which probably means no class B device support ever.

Not using Winbox for configuration ? it's so much better than web-based interface or the APP.

Xose Pérez • 5 years ago

I can't tell. Winbox is Windows-only. I see it can be run on Wine thou. But I found the web app and mobile app more than enough...

Roggen Bram • 5 years ago

if you run it in wine, it's sometimes better to add a default gateway on your ethernet configuration even if you don't need it. it gives better mac discovery results, I'm not sure if this is still a problem with the latest winbox releases.
