Hi thestatsguy, just recently came across your post as I applied to this course at NUS and found it overall very informative, espescially if I end up getting admitted.
I had a question though, one that I haven't seen covered in your FAQ regarding this post/review. I am a mechanical engineering graduate who wants to pivot into a field that uses and applies statistics as its core. My hope was by taking up this course, I would be able to break into such a field, espescially given the lack of work experience and relevant degree.
So, in your opinion, do you think this degree would help me pivot into a role that has statistics at its core, given I pursue some internship as well while I do the course?
Another related question but, how good are my chances of getting hired as a quant researcher or data scientist after I complete a course like this?
Thanks again for all the helpful info and hope to hear from you soon!
Hi,
Just wondering is programming in R, or hands-on programming used in the course?
Or is it all very theoretical?
Hi Jose, R programming is used in various modules in the MSc, to solve and teach specific problems and concepts. That said, statistical theory play a larger role in the course. Programming is not the focus.
Hello, I found your review very helpful as I'm also interested in the MSc in Statistics. My bachelor degree was in economics where i did several advanced econometrics modules, though not nearly as advanced as the stats courses. I wanted to ask if you think I stand a chance to be admitted? If not, do you think that online courses on edx, such as micromasters courses, can boost my application chances? Thanks
Hi Joe, thanks for reading. I would think that you have a decent chance at being admitted. Based on what I know about undergrad econometrics modules (in NUS), the rigour is there and is sufficient. I am not sure about online courses since I hardly take any of them - there may be a lack of such courses that covers fundamental (or theoretical) statistics. You should give it a shot and apply for the MSc Stats programme.
Hey thestatsguy, thanks for the encouragement. Perhaps I will give it a shot. Thanks :)
All the best!
Would you mind sharing the midterm paper for ST5218?

thestatsguy Hi there, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I am considering a part time as you did, would you be open to share more with me?
