Political and human rights are property rights. If one owns themselves, then they have God and Nature Given Rights to their Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness that means right of self-determination and protection of their property, freedom to work or not work, and freedom of movement. Freedom of Speech is almost completely misunderstood per Rothbard's "The Ethics of Liberty." I cannot yell "fire" in a theater because I violate the property rights of the owner and the property rights of the other patrons who paid the owner to attend. Colon Kraperdick has every right to rent a hall and urinate on the flag (as I am sure he would like to do?) but he does not have the right to protest at a football game and on Sports television. This is why I refuse to watch the NFL, and it does not matter if Colon is present, but that the NFL gave up their property rights that affects my property right of watching a football game without being harassed by communists.

Rothbard explains that the problem with government is no one is sure who owns the property. If Hillsdale College, the protestors would surely be arrested and charged by President Larry Arnn. But at Dingleberry Public or publicly funded schools, government has "Assignee" roles who are nothing more than totalitarian Bureaucrats enforcing vague property rights. The students who riot are criminals. They do not own the college and are expropriating other's rights when they shut down free speech. They are actually dumb SOB's as they do not understand that under the notions of "democracy" and "collectivism," they essentially give up their individual property rights and assign them to a totalitarian government who claims to "OWN" Free Spaces shutting down Free Speech.

Al Adab • 5 years ago

This is why property rights extend far beyond just what so many think. They are the source of wealth worldwide as Hernando de Soto of Peru showed us in "Mystery of Capital". They are also the basis of all our rights in that our thoughts and wealth are our property.

Still the other issue here is why not hear from someone who lived under a totalitarian regime and them helped rebuild the liberties of hks country? He might actually have an insight or two worth considering especially these days when so many national politicians seem enamored of using government force to impose a social and economic agenda on this country.

VonMisesJr • 5 years ago

"Mystery of Capital" is a must read for anyone interested in "rights." Hoppe makes clear in his "Economics and Ethics of Property Rights" and other writings that once so-called "progressive" idiots join the "collective," they surrender all rights as an individual. This is not only true philosophically and logically, but practically as a "collective" can NEVER make any decision. We do not know how many or who is in America, and since the "progressives" do not want a Census inquiring into who is a citizen, here legally or illegally; how do they get this magical and mysterious "majority?"

Diversity is death! Just ask China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Germany, France, United Kingdom and the rest of the EU.

Glass Ceiling • 5 years ago

The EU is divided on this. If you ask the western members they (the governments not the people) will tell you it's working out fine. The eastern members, the ones who survived decades of communism, say it's not a good thing. American liberals such as those at The American Interest (misnamed) interpret this as meaning that the eastern members of the EU have been damaged by their communist experience and are unable to see reality. This seems to contain an admission that the Soviets didn't get their version of socialism-communism precisely correct like will happen the next time some regime tries it.

Free to Speak: Reforming the Higher Education Act.
Intellectual freedom is the anvil on which great debates are hammered out.
It is the forge of civilization.
It is the fire in which we burn away the fallacies in the raw ore of ideas.
[…] much of the discussion around the reauthorization of the HEA has focused on reforming federal student aid. But without intellectual freedom, college is not a good investment. It is an empty forge and a cold furnace, where ideas are left to rust. Other reforms may bring the cost of college down, but we must better protect free inquiry in order to bring the quality of college up.
We call on Congress to cease subsidizing unlawful behavior by public colleges and universities, and to protect freedom of speech on college campuses.
https://www.nas.org/articles/free_to_speak_reforming_the_higher_education_act

I’m persuaded, but, Free to Speak needs a lot more academic signees. Imagine Camille Paglia's testimony before Congress.
Also, alumnae need to send this to the president or chancellor of their alma mater president, as a way of explaining why we stopped donations.
Everyone needs to let Congress hear their voice on the urgent need for reform in academia.

Rachelle Peterson, NAS spokesperson, on April 25: https://www.nas.org/articles/the_higher_education_act_must_protect_free_speech links to this on April, 22, 2019

[…] So far, this Congress has shown no interest in protecting freedom of speech in the Higher Education Act. Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chair of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions [HELP] Committee, left free speech off his HEA agenda. When President Trump issued his executive order on free speech, Alexander criticized it as “creating speech codes” for colleges and universities to follow — which it clearly does not.
Alexander, who has served as president of the University of Tennessee and secretary of the Department of Education under George H.W. Bush, is retiring in 2020. Evidently he sees the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act as a key piece of his legacy and wants to forge a compromise with House Democrats, who believe affordability and access are the key issues in higher education. […] https://thehill.com/opinion/education/439772-the-higher-education-act-must-protect-free-speech

HELP Committee membership does not include a fighter, especially with Sen. Warren (D-MA-Federal Forgiveness of Student Loans2020) https://www.help.senate.gov/about
It’s up to NAS to persuade Alexander (?)
Reauthorization of HEA only happens once every 4-5 years.
I don't believe America can wait for Alexander to retire his way.

"For millions of Americans, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press are inviolable principles. An attack on any of these ideals is an attack on democracy."

For the leftist out there without those things there isn't a democracy, you might keep that in mind. Still I know what the objective is with all these cancellations and safe spaces and hate speech rhetoric. It is all just a means to silence the majority and then to institute a new ruling order.

Wareagle82 • 5 years ago

The left works diligently to bastardize the language. In its dictionary, 'diversity' actually means multi-hued group think. Total allegiance to all tenets of the proggy dogma is required. Total. To all tenets. Don't dare be a Hispanic who opposes open borders. Don't dare be a lesbian who thinks biological men have no business competing with genetic women. Increasingly, don't dare be white.

The human animal can with some degree of success from a very young age be conditioned down to that dog ringing that bell to get a treat (free). A childhood filled with "industry" and striving to overcome life's obstructions will generally favor the human side of that equation not the animal side. What we have on parade today is often just the outcome of a conditioned animal expecting to get its treat (free) by doing what its been rewarded for a couple decades plus...

Recently I attended either one of the largest ADD conventions or several school trips to a rather important historical location. Compared to my own experience with such back in the 50s and 60s little to no learning could come from what were out of control elementary and middle school students. The presenters had to frequently stop and wait for the students to quiet so they could continue. I stood among the ADD afflicted and could barely hear what was being presented and there was a horde of written that could have been read with the displays that no one seemed to bother with. I can imagine that the day care providers and Administers of such simply checked off one more box on their to do list and never held any of the students accountable for what was presented. Multiple this by 240 days a year, and 12 years and you will pretty much get that famous conditioned dog that knows nothing but what it has been conditioned to perform for. From what I've seen today colleges and universities are just finishing schools for this.

My experience with home schooled students is pretty much the polar opposite. The question then becomes what is missing from public schooling that isn't for home schooled students? One of the three important ingredients in any well rounded education I'd opine. Loving and involved parents. Takes a whole lot of loving and involvement by two parents to counter act all the bell ringing and conditioning for free treats that most US students are subjected to today. The Public School system rewards intolerance and provides treats to those that fall in line to party guidelines.

Likewise the schooling institutions are conditioned to that which government rewards. Just as those spoiled brats got away with disrupting the presentations I saw so will the institutions that feed this Beast because they are well rewarded for their tolerance of such. Its just a check box to be filled in for most involved in this passion play. Holding anyone accountable for that which someone else pays the bulk for seems remote in this day and time. This conditioning starts early and occurs often throughout a young child's development into Pavlov's pet. The dog doesn't really know why it does what it does only that it expects to be rewarded for doing it...

vladdy1 • 5 years ago

We found that behaviorism, as you say, works miracles with "ADD" kids. They do what they are supposed to and are rewarded. They do not, and they have to watch while others get the rewards. Works very well, which makes one question how many were just not raised to behave. For a long while in gov. schools, nearly all disruptive students were eventually labelled "ADD." But of course, administration must cooperate. When you have those sad-sacks who insist on regular rewards for the whole school, regardless of behavior, that interferes.

The serpent seed have taken control of our America. I say STOP immigration from all third world countries. It wasn't meant to make countries diverse. Diversity causes conflict due to the differences of the people. It's common sense to me. We now have an enemy within our government, and country.

Yes I often do, too, Collectivism is painted as being good for everyone involved, but in the end, you find out it's the people serving the collective, not the other way around. The useful idiots believe they are being catered to, without realizing they are to serve as the main dish. Gee, and it sounded sooo good, too!

If someone invites a far right anti-gay speaker the college has a right to consider whether they are suitable or not. End of argument.

Ian Deal • 5 years ago

This is not an argument. The strategy of the left has long been to libel and slander anyone who disagrees with them. Freedom of speech and tenure both exist for the same reason--whoever is in power wishes to suppress the speech of anyone who disagrees with them. If humans are to progress, free speech must exist. No one on the right tries to silence those on the left. The only reason one wants to silence a critic is because one can't win the argument. There is nothing more stupid than celebrating 'diversity' as a goal. Not allowing people to participate because of gender, race, sexual orientation, or religion is repugnant. Insisting that people gain entry because of their gender, race, sexual orientation, or religion is equally repugnant.
