France, it seems, would rather view the carnage left by rampaging terrorists on the streets of Paris than religious images that promote peace and harmony.

Religious images - icons, statues, crucifixes etc. - promote more than peace and harmony. It is an external profession of faith in the Incarnation of the Eternal Word.

St. Basil the Great says that the honor given to an image passes over to its prototype. In fact, the intention for the 5th First Saturday is to make reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for those who blaspheme and outrage Her in Her holy images. And when Our Lord gave the Devotion to His Holy Face to Sr. Mary of St. Peter, He said:

"As in an earthly kingdom you can procure all you wish with a coin marked with the prince's effigy, so in the kingdom of Heaven you may obtain all you desire with the precious coin of My holy Humanity, which is My adorable countenance." (Oct. 29, 1845)

This is why in the Byzantine Tradition - Catholic and non-Catholic - we commemorate the Fathers of Nicea II, the Seventh Ecumenical Council on the Sunday between October 11-18 and the restoration of the Holy Icons on the First Sunday of the Great Fast:

As a precious adornment
the Church of Christ has received the venerable and holy icons of the Saviour Christ,
of God’s Mother and of all the saints.
Celebrating now their triumphant restoration,
she is made bright with grace and splendour,
and drives away all heretics.
With great rejoicing
she gives glory to God who loves mankind,
and who for her sake
has endured His voluntary Passion.

MOURNING
BELLS

The bells -
They stopped years ago
At the Consecration
Of many a Mass

Where kneeling down
Their Savior adore
The people said "...that
We'll pass."

And now at six
The happy-hour
When the Angelus
Used to chime

There are no bells
To remind the people
Pray your souls
To prime.

And in the night clubs
Dancing till dawn
The people sin
No regret…

And now at six
The “mourning” hour
Bells die with each passing
Minaret.
