Here’s a radical idea: keep some bezel and put in decent front-firing stereo speakers.

I use one at work, and think the main problems are actually software/IOS based.

I think the hardware is pretty outstanding already. And don’t expect the 2018 to be a big upgrade, in that respect. They’ve just totally re-designed the Iphone. I don’t think they’re totally going to re-design the Ipad as well in same year. I only expect minor changes, in regards to the look, and hardware.

Problems with IOS is just it’s integration with Apps, and integration with Google apps in particular.

Like, I can close Netflix App, and carry on watching it as a small-screen in the corner. But I can’t do that with Youtube, or most other streaming/video apps. I want to be able to do that with every video app.

And a lot of big apps just haven’t been redesigned for the Ipad yet. Which is pretty ridiculous.

Like, I can only use instagram in portrait mode. When 99% of the time it’s in the dock, in landscape mode. And I think it’s the same with Uber.

And some apps just don’t work at all on IPads. Like Tinder and WhatsApp

So, to conclude, I always have it in a docking station/keyboard situation, so it’s always in landscape mode. I want all apps to work in that mode.

I want to be able to logon, and look at Uber, or Tinder, or Instagram, or WhatsApp without taking it out of a docking station.

If that happens, it will almost be the ultimate device.

You can actually do that with the YouTube app but you need an active Youtube Red subscription. Its not Apple holding you back its Youtube themselves.

I seriously doubt it. Slump in iPad sales these days, nobody will want the home button on the front. Just picked up a new iPhone, I'll never buy a device with a home button again... They must make the leap to face ID get ASPs back up for iPad other wise iPad is a wash for another year...

I don’t think they’ll have USB, or long battery life, for several years yet. 5 years maybe?

Simple reason - if iPad pros had all that, why would you need a MacBook?

In my opinion, they probably want to to eventually replace MacBooks with Ipad-pro-style device, that doubles up as tablet and computer. But that’s about 5 years away at least

Bro FUUUUUUUUCK YOU you want carbon fiber back and 2 tb ssd and reduced price you fucking idiot carbon fiber is expensive as fuck my real carbon fiber iPhone X case cost me 80 bucks imagine how much an iPad with a carbon fiber back would cause and another thing a 2 terabyte ssd tends to be large long story short fuck you and also three words NEVER GONNA HAPPEN

Just make the 12.9" lighter, specifically, under 1 pound if possible, and I’d be pretty happy right there.

I personally don’t care about Face ID (I wouldn’t pay 2 cents for it in and of itself), but if that gets rid of the bezels and thus shrinks the case a bit and helps drop the weight, than I’m all for it.

I’d like a 1 TB storage option, but I don’t think Apple is going to give that this year.

Apple should allow you to hook up a mouse or track pad. Personally, I hate the mouse, and not having to use a mouse was one of the main things that made me jump on the iPad in the first place. However, most people love using a mouse and it would help with wider adoption as well as with flexibility.

Software:
— allow full on separate windows you can place anywhere. Allow multiple instances of 1 program

— Negotiate to get Microsoft to have free or at least non-subscription Office apps like for the < 10" iPads. Negotiate with Google to allow YouTube to play with the video not visible (or at least in a shrunken window). Of course Google has their whole "YouTube Red" plan, so that may not be posssible

— Continue to merge iOS and MAC OS, with the end goal being an eventual full merger or at least full cross compatibility. The mouse/trackpad compatibility step mentioned above would be a strong step in that direction

—Allow one to develop iOS apps on an iPad Pro!

Battery — current battery life is very good when not using the Pencil, but a bit longer is always better (especially for Pencil use)

Make the Pencil a bit shorter (not much) and with an eraser back tip that you don’t have to remove to charge the Pencil. Have a way of neatly attaching the Pencil to the iPad

Keep the headphone jack.
Waterproofing would be nice, though not essential

Considering it’s not a full on laptop replacement yet, the price where it is is a bit hard to swallow. "Eye watering" might be a good term. Any price reduction would help

I am unsure if i should be the ipad 9.7 or the ipad pro 12.9.

I will only use it for university and watching videos. My biggest concern with the ipad is the smaller size.

Dan Grabham and Britta O'Boyle,
Interesting article much good information, thank you.

FYI: Please check your grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. As an example, your use of however and though are misplaced thus creating convoluted sentences.

:P I wish they update the iPad mini but if not I'll go with new iPad Pro 10.5".... I been holding for almost half a year since I've ditch my 12" its way too big for my taste but cheaper iPad model this year also less ideal because i dislike how it's not laminated including crappy audio... the very thing I like on 12" if its only lighter for travel I might still have keep it

An iPad mini pro would have been something.

applepiepudding • 5 years ago

I just wish Photo app to do batch renaming or rename at all so organing is easier and more ways to connect easily to external harddrives. Backup to cloud is not always option with so much data and photo degradation - we need local storage options like any other device.
