When I think of Belgian food , I think of waffles and chocolates. But the seafood at L'Ecailler du Palais Royal sounds amazing. I also enjoyed the story about Laurent Gerbaud.

Among all the Belgian foods tourists usually include in their checklists (chocolate, fries, waffles, beer, cheese etc), waffles are definitely the best one, cherry beer is also pretty awesome.

Hahhaha absolutely have to agree on that! Waffles are definitely my favorite too. And the cherry beer is delishhh! Did you try the one with peach as well?

LOVE the Brussels Beer Projec! Not the regular Belgium beer bar. Great atmosphere and
tried some of their brews it's amazing. Must stop by if you love beer.

Oh how I wish I'd read this post before my trip to Brussels! I tried to survive on fries, beer and chocolate (with the odd waffle thrown in for good measure) and by the end of it all I wanted was a proper dinner but had no idea where to look. I love the rooftop bar, will definitely check it out my next time there!

Oh wow!! so much amazing food options it would be so hard for me to decide which one to try first. I think I would go to Restaurant Rooftop Musical Instruments Museum for the first.

Oh yes, I can totally recommend the Rooftop of the Musical Instruments Museum. Even if it's just for a drink, you have to see those views all over Brussels.

I wish that I knew this guide before! I was in Brussels and was overwhelmed by all the restaurants.

The food in Brussels was so good! I think my favorite thing was the mussels! I had it at several places and it was always good. I would love to check out the rooftop bar on my next trip.

Yessss, waffles are my favorite too. You can really eat them anytime, but I especially like them during the winter months.

I wish I had stumble upon this post earlier this year! I've heard a lot of positive comments regarding the food in Brussels. When I visited this past May, I didn't think the food was that good. Hi Paulina - Yes, I was there May of this year. I loved Brussels, but I feel like I didn't experience "everything the city has to offer" - many people would ask me: " did you eat here? and went there?" and I was like: "Did I miss something here?" haha Next time, I'll make it right :)

Sorry Paulina, but with a bit more research you could have actually shown what Belgian cuisine is really about, instead of this assembly of tourist traps and easy finds. Yes, most people know by now that you can find chocolate and beer in Belgium (gasp). What a lot of people do not know (and will never do, if they keep reading these type of articles), is that you can actually find a great assortment of good restaurants throughout Brussels, that make innovative dishes which include beer or serve up classics like Waterzooi, lapin à la kriek or carbonade flamande.
The restaurant on top of the Musical instruments museum is certainly not one of them: it actually serves only very mediocre food, that mostly reminded me of a roadside restaurant. I agree with you on the view though!

Many thanks for your comment. My post aspires to show the innovative facet of chocolate & beer culture in Brussels. Of course brands like Godiva, Leonidas etc are well known, but I wanted to give small, local creators like Lauren Gerbaud a platform. Same thing for the Brussels Beer Project.

I am a huge fan of Waterzooi (both chicken or fish) but so far I still couldn't decide where's the best in town. Where's your favorite place to enjoy a good Waterzooi? I've been told that the one in Brasserie Taverne du Passage is very good.

Concerning the rooftop restaurant of the Musical Instruments museum, I had the filet americain, which was excellent. Ok, you could see & feel that the staff is rather used to attend tourists, but still, the views countervailed everything. I really like rooftop bars, but in Brussels I just know the terrace of the MIM. Do you have any alternative in mind?

Of course this article is not an extensive guide to Brussels's gastronomic scene, (that would be beyond the scope of travel blogging) but a rather personal selection. As I hope to return to Brussels (since very close to Luxembourg), I want to fill up the list over a longer period. I am looking forward to hearing about your recommendations. :)

And now I'm dreaming about waffles! And that museum of musical instruments sounds fun! I'm officially adding Belgium to my travel bucket list!

I suddenly have a craving for chocolate and beer! I really enjoyed Belgian food when I was there. I don't know anyone who doesn't like waffles, they'd really have to be from another planet!

I haven't been to Brussels but have been to Bruges. All the food you posted looks amazing! I have to say, that waffle truck would be my favorite. I ate so many waffles in Bruges!

Can I just say how much I loved this post? I'm not a beer-drinker, but some of those places, especially the tavern, look like they'd be fun to visit. I'm also super interested in the exotic chocolate experience that you mentioned. I love that there are classes offered at the atelier, so visitors can more fully immerse themselves.

Some great tips to remember here! A favourite restaurant of mine is Fin de Siecle and I also love the Mer du Nord seafood bar in St Catherine!
