Here's a solution....hunt them before they become wasted road kill.

Here's my favorite recipe............Garlic And Lemon Herb Squirrel

~ 1 squirrel, cut into serving pieces
~ 2 tbsp lemon juice
~ 2 tbsp olive oil
~ 2 tsp minced garlic
~ 1 tsp salt
~ 1/2 tsp black pepper
~ 1/2 tsp thyme
~ 1/4 tsp rosemary
~ 1/4 tsp basil
~ 1/4 tsp dill seed

In a small bowl, add the salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, basil and dill. Mix and crush it together.

Stir in the lemon juice, oil and garlic. Mix well.

Place the squirrel pieces in a zip lock bag and pour in the marinade. Work it into the meat.

Seal and refrigerate a couple of hours or overnight. Flip often.

Remove and drain the meat.

Grill on a hot grill over medium heat flipping as needed until tender and cooked through.

Or place in a baking dish and bake for 30 – 40 minutes at 450 degrees.

Serve with some tasty punch and enjoy.

You can use your favorite herbs in place of or with those listed.

You hillbilly. Let's mail the roadkill to the White House where the rest of it is.

OrgFarm • 5 years ago

Sounds like you feel it's better to squish them with your car when the population explodes.

That sounds kinda demented.

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

What do you recommend for sea gulls and crows?

disqus_t9AqZQH8T0 • 5 years ago

Mike Huckabee once boasted of frying squirrels in his popcorn popper in college.

Rufus Firefly • 5 years ago

The ticks say: "Yummy! Fresh meat & lots of it!"

No Fake News • 5 years ago

Hilarious.. you serious? How many squirrels does it take to feed a family at dinner time?

OrgFarm • 5 years ago

Well, the daily bag limit is 4 and you can have 8 in possession. If you have a large family I'd suggest a hearty stew using 5 or 6. I sometimes cook them by placing them in a pot of homemade beans and bake with the beans.

Here's a link to around 70 different squirrel recipes that'll make your mouth water.

Damn straight. And people better get used to the idea because soon we will all be eating them. I do think they should open the gray squirrel season for year round hunting. Red squirrels are too damn thin.

townfarmer • 5 years ago

C'mon down and get some flying squirrels... I don't want em...

OrgFarm • 5 years ago

No hunting of flying squirrels....you're stuck with those.

townfarmer • 5 years ago

Wanner bet?

OrgFarm • 5 years ago

Nope.

townfarmer • 5 years ago

How about a monument for them when they get killed on the highways?

pleasepost • 5 years ago

Maybe PETA will start a partition to keep all horseless carriages off the roadways.

KeepResisting • 5 years ago

I, for one, am happy for the increase. Soon, we will all be eating them, just to survive. lovesnow provided a great recipe but you can also just put the squirrel pieces in a covered casserole dish/crock pot and just cover them with a can of Cream of Mushroom soup. Cook until done. Easy peasy, Japanesey.

The road kill has been very noticable. Thank you for this reporting.

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

Scavengers seem to be far and few, making those killed more obvious to the driver.

Seriously? • 5 years ago

I don't think squirrels are smart enough to use an under-road culvert.

reallly?? • 5 years ago

do we have any?

Seriously? • 5 years ago

Under-road culverts? Yes, lots of them. Culverts specifically for the use of animals? No idea.

Don L • 5 years ago

Let me interject another thought inbetween other posts about recipes, hunting, and facetious monuments - that is, knowing that squirrels are often trying to cross the road and sometimes stop in the middle, how about we humans drive more carefully and watch out for them? We're supposed to have our eye on the road anyway, and if you can swerve without causing an accident and save a life in the process, why wouldn't you? All critters including the human kind appreciate being alive rather than dead.

Robert West • 5 years ago

Bad advice for drivers, squirrels tend to change direction quickly and zigzag a bit, but you do what you feel you need to do.

Hopefully, no innocent people are killed.

Joe • 5 years ago

Swerving to avoid a squirrel is really bad advice. Great way to cause an accident and injure yourself or an innocent person. Too many accidents are caused by people trying to miss a little beast.

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

Porcupines, skunks, 'possums and your neighbor's cats are another matter, esp. at night.

Hans Bryant • 5 years ago

"...if you can swerve without causing an accident and save a life in the process, why wouldn't you?"

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

Young squirrels especially with ever faster cars, wider lanes and bike ways.

Don L • 5 years ago

This point is already covered in my post, Robert - I guess you missed it, so here it is again - " if you can swerve without causing an accident and save a life in the process, why wouldn't you?" In other words, if you can save a life, you should try to do so unless you cause another life to be lost in the process. Let me add that while it may be true that squirrels may zig and zag, they will also stop in the road. That's the time to swerve - safely.

HikingBiking • 5 years ago

Really bad advice.

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

Like stopping to see which way they will go; all in a split second???????

Don L • 5 years ago

Really bad advice? Sounds like an echo. It's worth the effort to save a life if you can, and it helps to remember that squirrels want to live as much as we do. The humane thing to do is to give them a chance to survive. Maybe you've heard the motto "Live and Let Live." It applies to all species.

William Van Twisk • 5 years ago

Hey, we all love animals--but if we had ever spoken to the family of someone who was killed by going off the road to avoid hitting an animal, we would NEVER say to even think about avoiding one in the road. I always taught my kids: "don't swerve, hit the dog!" There's as much chance that the animal will run off in some direction, and you will survive!

lockdown • 5 years ago

Is PETA going to request that they make a memorial for all the poor Squirrels who are killed on Maine Roads. Would each road have one or would there be 1 Giant one somewhere ?

Charlene Whalen Oakley • 5 years ago

I had not read your post when I posted mine. Great minds think alike!

exitseven • 5 years ago

My father used to pick them off with his .22 rifle and my grandmother used to skin them and fry them up. They were not as tasty as you would think.

Seriously? • 5 years ago

I really didn't think they'd be all that tasty.

Squirrel !

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

Drove down to Portland from Brunswick yesterday afternoon on I295. Saw one dead squirrel, then another and another...sometimes only 20' apart. Maybe a total of 30 between Brunswick and Yarmouth.

Is this a natural occurrence? Or some kind of migration from Freeport northward?

My guess is that DOT's cutting back of the trees along both sides of 295 created a barrier and forced the squirrels to stay on the ground; first crossing the North bound lanes during a very busy time of the year, then the grassy lane separator, and, finally the two lanes going south....all through 75 mph + traffic!

Did the deaths occur because of injuries sustained during crossing, or maybe even a heart attack(?).

The visible evidence may be there because the cutbacks discouraged scavengers from removing them? Crows would wait in trees to swoop down and get one; but the clear cuts eliminated this safe perch.

Perhaps DOT should rethink it's clear cutting strategy which I believe was designed to enable speeding drivers to see deer more clearly. Squirrels pose no danger; deer do so....

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

As more and more trees are clear cut, squirrel habitat is reduced and increasing migration. Young squirrels don't have the skill set to quickly cross a road with ever faster traffic and distracted drivers on cell phones. Scavengers seem to be leaving carcasses on the road, perhaps they too are in decline. Squirrels put on weight at this time of the year, making them slower; and urban gardening is also providing food sources.

Remember, they are an official pest and gardeners/farmers can eliminate them.

If you're in a 'squirrel zone' keep your distance from the car in front of you, to avoid hitting them if they decide to hit the brakes and avoid hitting a squirrel you may not have seen.

Charlene Whalen Oakley • 5 years ago

I don't see PETA screaming about putting memorial signs on the roads for all the smashed squirrels that were run over. Where are they?

HikingBiking • 5 years ago

Well, one of their members did suggest drivers "swerve" to avoid them in the road.

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

or hitting the brakes and dropping your cell phone!

George • 5 years ago

Hey, squirrels! Watch our for Stormy weather tonight!. Especially on Riverside Dr.!

reallly?? • 5 years ago

booming acorn drop this year TOO!!!!

Bay Watcher • 5 years ago

Good point, acorns are largely buried and dug up after tannic acid leaches out.
