Holmes is great thank you!
(11 days later) Our pleasure!
Will you translate the new Holmes novel?
You betcha
Any chance to translate the below one day? Is it related to the Tatami Galaxy? Thanks so much!
It's one of his shorts, not much to do with TTG, but I'll add it to the queue (maybe in between novels)
Thank you and a very lovely new website design!
Anyone? please
https://animeuknews.net/201...
It is said "Actually, it’s a trilogy. So, there’s a first one and then The Tatami Galaxy is the second and Night is Short, Walk on Girl is the third in the trilogy"
Anyone knows what is the first book in the trilogy then?
"It’s a bit like Star Wars, where we made the second and third first – and then hopefully we’ll make the first at some point."
Yuasa said it in his interview (In the exact same paragraph that you were qouting)
I've read through the short stories collection and I gotta thank you once again on your hard work translating Morimi stories!
Is there a lot of short stories out there by Morimi? I'm not sure how normal it is for him to write for magazines.
His JP wikipedia page has a decent list―he's not an extremely prolific writer, but there are a fair number out there (side note: if anyone has a copy of the shorts that were included with the TTMB movie tickets I'd love to take a crack at those!)
I have a copy and tried to email you but got a 'could not deliver' email of it bouncing back. If you don't own a copy yet, please get back to me!
Oh my bad, don't know how I missed this! It should be fixed now if you want to try sending it again (nvm it is not fixed) (ok now it's fixed)
hey im so glad thanks to you and Mochiguma team, I was finally able to
read the Uchouten Kazoku novels, what a fun writer Morimi is. Whats your
favorite work from him?
Probably Yoiyama Kaleidoscope, it's pure magic without having both feet over the line into fantasy (also it's one of my better translations). As I age into a boomer my college years start to recede it's harder to identify with any of the college protagonists, though tatami will always have a fond place in my heart ofc
Excited for your comeback! Thank you for The Adventures of a Saintly Vending Machine!
Sorry for the bother, but would it maybe be possible to mention the source of each short story? Just in case some of us would like to look for the original publication in Japanese? Thank you in advance Gods
Absolutely! I'd meant to do it starting from the first story, so thanks for the reminder!
Oh!! ... Sorry for any mistakes in my writing, ... English isn't my native language.
I know, ... but is probably impossible for me to get those (in any format). Thanks for answer me anyway. If there is another way for you share it, ... or someone else around here who is able to do it; ... I would really appreciated.
Sorry if I'm pushing it; ... is just that I'm completly fascinated by Tomihiko Morimi's universe, so I would really like to read his work (as much as possible). Thanks again; ... this is a beautiful project (a lot of heart in it), ... good luck ahead!!
Sorry for bothering, ... is there any chance for you to reupload the The Tatami Galaxy / Tatami Time Machine Blues novels. Thanks, ... i mean, just for taking the time (trouble) of reading this.
Both of those have been officially licensed, so we won't be reuploading them.
Thanks for your work! Just FYI, you can usually get high-resolution covers from Booklive for your epubs by searching site:booklive.jp <name>, and then right-clicking on the thumbnail and replacing the filename with an X. Melos, for example, is:
That is a very useful tip, thank you!
Thank you so much for Melos+4! Looking forward to the essays/SS!

When is the next chapter release?
Now. Sorry for the delays, the schedule for the next releases should be more regular...but I've said that before.
Hi, as a long time reader, I appreciate for the translations! I have a couple of questions for koiabi and eerabbit (but would be happy to also hear answers from others):
1. I am already up to date with all of your translations, do you have any recommendations for other authors or books similar to Morimi that I can explore while waiting for new releases?
2. I was wondering what do you think of Haruki Murakami? A lot of people seem to compare Morimi and him, but I personally adore Morimi and really dislike Murakami, so I was wondering how you would compare the two...do you like Murakami and who do you think is better than the two?
Thanks so much :)
1. Sorry, I don't really have any book recs either. If you haven't watched Kuuchuu Buranko though, I think it has some similarities to Tatami Galaxy though maybe a little more weird.
2. I never thought to compare Murakami and Morimi until now; I guess I can kind of see their similarities but really wouldn't put them in the same category. I enjoy some of his books (Kafka on the Shore), but otherwise am not a diehard fan. I think Morimi's story ideas are generally more engaging than Murakami's.
Thanks for reading :)
Thank you for reading, we appreciate your support!
1. I don't really have much in English to recommend, though I've been hearing some noise about The Cat Who Saved Books, which I admittedly haven't read. Makime Manabu frequently draws comparisons to Morimi, but none of his books have been translated (into English, at any rate). Night on the Galactic Railroad might be worth a read, if you haven't read it yet.
2. I am profoundly grateful that Morimi has never been nominated for a Bad Sex in Fiction award. I am profoundly disappointed that Morimi has never been nominated for a Bad Sex in Fiction award.
Thank you both for answering so quickly :) much appreciated!
For Through Kyoto Streets, is it necessary to read all the original classic stories to understand it?
No, these are Morimi-fied enough that you don't need any knowledge of the originals to enjoy them, though of course it wouldn't hurt.
Now Tower of the Sun is getting licensed! Did not expect that at all! So excited!
Rather a good thing we decided to do Uchōten Kazoku 2 instead
Thanks so much as always for Uchōten Kazoku 2! Looking forward to what's next!
Is there any chance that you would ever translate 森見登美彦の京都ぐるぐる案内 or are you only sticking to fiction? I am so curious about his Kyoto guide...either way, you guys are amazing! Thank you!!
We're not opposed to doing the nonfiction stuff, but we reckon most people are probably going to want to read the fiction stuff first. There's actually very little Morimi writing in the travel guide—there are a couple of essays by him and then the rest is just excerpts from the books and regular travel guide stuff for the locations that appear in his books. Useful if you're planning a pilgrimage of sorts, but otherwise eminently skippable.
I just finished your translation of TTMB, and (big disclaimer -- I do not know Japanese) thought your translation was brilliant. Thank you so much for doing this brutal, uncompensated work out of sheer love for Morimi's output. I wish I could do more than simply offer my thanks, but for now, I think that should do. Thank you!
We really appreciate it! The only thing we ask for in return is that you support the author by buying the official translations (if it's within your means). Thank you for reading!
Hello guys, just wanna say thanks - have read your translations for both Tatami novels and just recently Night Train and they really were fantastic stuff!
Night Train definitely took me unaware near the end and left me thinking a lot. Keep up the good work!
God bless yall
And now TTMB is getting an anime adaptation, kind of expected but wasn't expecting it that soon. It just gets better and better.
Hats off to you for all your hard work on TG, it was definitely not in vain. I am planning on getting the official release just to have the physical books in my collection, but I read and reread your translations and greatly enjoyed them, and I am sure I will reread them in the future too. Your level of writing is fantastic and is so much higher quality than other fan translations, I am actually not even sure the official translation will be as good. I just really hope this doesn't discourage you from continuing this project as I think most of the other works by Morimi will likely never get licensed, and I am still hoping to read things such as Tatami Galaxy Kingdom Memoirs and Tower of the Sun. Anyhow, thanks again, and your translated PDFs will forever be cherished in my hard drive.
That's very kind of you to say! Suffice it to say we're definitely not anywhere close to done yet. Thanks for sticking with us!
Tatami Galaxy and its sequel are getting licensed in English. Hyped to get more official translations but still really enjoyed yours.
Thank you for taking the effort to translate his books. I love The Tatami Galaxy and Night is Short, Walk on Girl. I wish I could support Morimi more—I do buy his books—but I’m just a simple broke gaijin living in America, and importing them isn’t cheap. The best I can do is build a little shrine here in his honor.
