Hi, Micah Redding. Thank you for your interview with physicist and mathematician Prof. Frank J. Tipler and your above article on his Omega Point cosmology. For those who would like more information on Tipler's Omega Point cosmology, which is a proof (i.e., mathematical theorem) of God's existence per the known laws of physics (viz., the Second Law of Thermodynamics, General Relativity, and Quantum Mechanics), see my following article, which also addresses the societal implications of the Omega Point cosmology and details how it uniquely conforms to, and precisely matches, the cosmology described in the New Testament: James Redford, "The Physics of God and the Quantum Gravity Theory of Everything", Social Science Research Network (SSRN), Sept. 10, 2012 (orig. pub. Dec. 19, 2011), 186 pp., https://archive.org/downloa... . This article further concerns the Feynman-DeWitt-Weinberg quantum gravity/Standard Model Theory of Everything (TOE), which is also required by said known physical laws. Tipler's Omega Point cosmology has been published and extensively peer-reviewed in leading physics journals.
Would life necessarily prefer a closed universe, though? Going the other way, there was the idea from Freeman Dyson about how an organism could think an infinity of thoughts in an infinite time using a finite amount of energy, relying on the universe cooling down and hence allowing it to always have a temperature difference to drive work...
So two visions, but both of which have Zeno-style paradoxes.
Of course, if it's possible to control the expansion of space-time, the 2nd law of thermodynamics would be over, because you could expand and contract regiong to continually create a temperature difference. So there's the third option of a dynamic but steady-state universe that is on the whole neither expanding nor contracting.
This is good, however it focuses on the known physics of space and time as we currently experience them. My understanding of the Omega Point would be where beings reach a level of intelligence where they transcend time and space. And it could happen well before the earth is fried by the sun. Thus it wouldnt be necessary to force the universe to always be habitable. Beings would already be eternal having escaped time That the universe may have a start and end would be no different from a geometric shape would have a start and end. The Omega Point could be at one point of the universe but perhaps could communicate with the whole on a higher level. BTW: Pierre Teilhard de Chardin also spoke of the OMega Point. I look forward to hearing more from you on this especially the theological aspect. Rock!!!
I like the scientific approach to the Singularity. "The fate of the Universe is a decision yet to be made, one which we will intelligently consider when the time is right." - Ray Kurzweil. That is true. I believe in the law of duality. You said "The end itself is rather simple. The universe continues to collapse, life continues to advance, complexity and organization and power continue to increase, intelligence continues to grow, and as the universe gets smaller and smaller, all of these accelerate exponentially. When the universe reaches its final point, life reaches infinity." I see it from a spiritual perspective. Life of a human is infinite, because we were created in the image of God, and God is the Alpha and Omega. He has no beginning and no end. "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb." Jer 1:5. Concepts in the Bible such as the second coming, resurrection, etc, suggest no end.
Hi Micah, awesome review, and I see you fixed the font problem on the blog. I'll interview Frank in a couple of weeks to zoom into some physics points.
Science doesn't "preach" anything, and Frank Tipler is verifiably delusional. You Christians really are too much sometimes...
