Whoever decided to remove the desktop functionalities is an idiot. Why would you remove features that so many people use every day; it seems really quite arrogant.

Hola, Mark. Gracias por este "how-to". With it, I was able to place my desktop icons in the precise places I wanted across the desktop. But sadly, when rebooting, all of them have moved to the left side of it, even though Self-arrange is unselected in Nemo desktop customize options. Only the Trash icon remains in place. Is it its normal behaviour of something is not working as intended? Thanks.

Unfortunately this does not work for me, when I try to uninstall it tries to remove ubuntu desktop.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons ubuntu-desktop ubuntu-desktop-minimal
On the video there was not this dependency issue. The problem is even though gnome-icons are set to false
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons false
I still get see the icons and with nemo enabled there are two set of icons.

But whit this trick move a file from the desktop into a nautilus open folder it works?

yeah with the current commands on this page, nemo manages the desktop icons, but nautilus is still the default file manager. if u have a nautilus window open, u can drag files between the desktop without any errors.

I've encountered an inconvenience, though. In case others face the same issue:
Once the desktop extensions is disabled, the desktop folder disapears from the sidebar in Nautilus. As a workaround, it can be added as a bookmark. Not quite the same, but works.

also, bookmark is a good workaround (i have no idea why an issue like that exists - probably the gnome devs really hate the desktop *cough cough* which is why they removed it)

Hey mark, Great blog but the nemo-desktop is also not effective. the gnome desktop is still there and not replaced.

I had to reboot to get rid of gnome desktop. I also had to open a terminal, invoke nemo-desktop, and keep the terminal running. There must be a correct way to automatically invoke nemo-desktop.

yes, adding a startup program for nemo-desktop is required.
If u do not include it (just as u pointed out), u have to launch it manually everytime.
Please follow the steps on my video. I've done it multiple times to make sure it is a reproducible setup.
