I think the "-A" problem you mention is linked with the fact that querying the userdb for all user does not work. I am trying to setup doveadm replicator. And for it to work, you need "sudo doveadm user '*'" to return a list of all users. But I have the same symptoms that you have. See output :
[laposte:: 19:31] [Mail/Config/dovecot] % sudo doveadm user '*'
doveadm(root): Error: userdb lookup: Request timed out
This thread point to a solution, http://www.dovecot.org/pipe..., but I have not being able to make it work yet.

It is called "SMTP", not "SMPT".

Thanks for this (now old) webpage. It's very helpful.
I am still nursing one OSX Server on Sierra, and I'm working on building an Ubuntu Server on a 2008 Mac Pro to replace it. Configuring Dovecot has proved to be painful for me! I miss my nice little GUI heaven(when it works). Thanks again.
