I like the idea of a small form factor case but with my setup I'm in the full ATX size category. I do not plan on using any storage other than M.2. Are there smaller cases that shed that space for the harddrives but still keep decent airflow for a higher end machine?

Daniel • 3 years ago

I think it sounds like you may be interested in a type of case that's typically called something like an "ATX mini tower." They're more rare, and the naming is not standardized, but some examples include the Cooler Master Elite 241, the Lian-Li PC-A51, and the Vivo Case-V00.

Is Silverstone the only company that makes 90 degree rotated board cases? My PC sits in a bit of a cramped space and top port access (particularly to the USBs) is far easier than rear. I've got an RV03 right now - which I love! - but I'm looking at a new case for a new build (my current machine is being given to a relative, whole and entire).

Daniel • 3 years ago

Just about, yeah. Silverstone makes the widest number of them. But In Win and Bitfenix have a few funky SFF case options, too. (And you may want to look into the others mentioned in the Mini ITX chart above, of course.)

I finished a Micro ATX build with my 10-year-old son with this Cooler Master MasterBox NR400 case and I loved it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B...
It checks a lot of boxes, considering it's a budget case and has really solid build quality. I also chose it as it has room for an optical drive, which most cases forego these days.

I'm interested in a case with a usb-c port on the front io. Other than the R6, do any of these cases come with one?

Daniel • 4 years ago

Some more case options with front panel USB-C ports include the Phanteks Evolv X, the Cooler Master Cosmos C700M, and the be quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 V2.

I'm interested in a building a PC for video editing and audio recording/mixing into a rackmount server chassis, so that I can integrate it with audio gear that racks at a standard 19". Do you have any recommendations for cases with this form factor? and any tips or caveats with building in server cases?

Daniel • 4 years ago

We don't really have any research of information about server-style cases at this time. Actually, that would be an interesting topic for us to consider looking into at some point in the future. But unfortunately, that means we don't really have any advice or tips for you.

How do you guys select cases? Will you add the Silverstone RL06 Pro? It seems like a really solid choice and I was wondering why it wasn't in the list. I've been comparing it to the h500, but I just realised that the RL06 Pro is smaller so it's probably less compatible.

Daniel • 4 years ago

Our selections come from collating research on quality, availability, age, reputability of manufacturer, and features.

Where Silverstone often falls flat (and even the ones that are listed above are not immune to this) is with availability. The only manufacturer with spottier availability in the charts above is In Win. We tend not to feature cases in these charts that are frequently out-of-stock, when we can avoid it.

That said, there is nothing wrong with Silverstone's lower-tier cases, per se. It's really just us being picky about making sure we're recommending stuff people can actually acquire, as much as possible. And I was able to find at least two colors of RL06 Pro on Amazon in-stock at the moment. It's also quite well-reviewed. So you should feel free to use that case, provided that your components will fit in it. And, as ever, we'll periodically check on the available cases and adjust the above charts if Silverstone is doing a better job of stocking its retailers this year.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if you use this site:
https://www.gamersnexus.net...

It's the only site, apart from Tom's Hardware, that seems to measure case temperatures, which is my highest priority aside from compatibility. If you have another source for case temperatures, I'd really appreciate it.

Edit: I was just reading through the last page of the review you linked me to and it does state some temperatures. Thanks for the link.

Daniel • 4 years ago

Those are the big ones that I know as well, for temps. But once you have your choices truly narrowed down to just a couple last contenders, it is often possible to find more extensive testing in dedicated YouTube videos.

Apparently, the Elite 130 supports standard ATX power supplies up to 200 mm in length. As that be quiet PSU is only 160 mm long, it should fit into that case with no issues.

Well, the specs page for the Elite 130 states compatibility with standard ATX PSUs. But the specific figure I mentioned is from the end of a HardwareCanucks review of the case.

In your Silent Cases section, the Corsair 400Q and 600Q seem to be notable omissions, alongside NZXT's Noctis 450 in ATX cases

Daniel • 5 years ago

Those would certainly be great choices, and we will keep our eyes on them; but we tend to avoid adding cases to these charts when they aren't available to people through primary online retailers (i.e. Amazon or Newegg) at the time of updating. And I can't currently find any of those three cases in-stock at either of those sites.

DerpZilla • 5 years ago

Why do you have the R5 and not the R6?

Daniel • 5 years ago

Great question! I'll add the R6 to the silent case chart soon.

Laserbean1903 • 5 years ago

Glad to see this finaly being a thing, as under the chart was a bit hidden to the casual viewer. I do have a suggestion for a case, so i'll leave it here. https://www.amazon.com/Mast... cheap, cool looking, and made by coolermaster. Panel is acrylic though.

Daniel • 5 years ago

Yeah, I spearheaded the migration because I felt the time and effort going into these charts was being significantly wasted in their old location. And thank you for the recommendation; that does indeed look like a good candidate for the mATX chart. I'll add it soon.

For the ITX luxury cases to small form factor (SFF) enthusiasts, the NCase M1 and the Dan A4-sfx are really good. I personally have the Fractal Design Node 304 but I'm looking to downsize again to the A4-sfx soon.

Daniel • 5 years ago

We tend to stick to well-established manufacturers and global or semi-global retailers as much as possible (to cater to the broadest number of users), but we will still definitely take a look at those recommendations. Thanks for the comment!

Keith • 5 years ago

If you're looking for high end ITX look at the H200i. The slight improvements over the h200 might be worth it for you. https://www.amazon.com/Mini...

monchee • 5 years ago

I would have to disagree. The CAM software that comes with the "i" model is not that great AFAIK. I would suggest to save a few bucks and go with the non-i model and put the money to your other parts.

Keith • 5 years ago

Fair point and one that should be considered. I've never experienced the software so wouldn't be a good source for it. Thanks for the insight!
