Nice article.

I'd like to add that I believe your empathy stems, in part, from the fact that you travel frequently. One cannot embark on a journey without this "skill."
In fact, I would argue that empathy is directly proportional to the distance one is willing to traverse to reach the next destination.

Certainly, empathy is nurtured as a child in the home, school, and other environments. But as an adult, you either unleash it yourself by stepping out of your comfort zone or by others who know how to lure you into environments designed specifically to do that.
