Great article, it saved me a few hours of experimenting the stuff out there myself. I would have probably ended up with the same setup. Except for the Let's Encrypt certificate which really isn't necessary.

You want "trusted" certificates when you deal with the public (like people who would connect to a website, because those certificates are recognized by the browser). Given this is for personal use, just generate a local certificate with the openssl command and manually trust the certificates by your IRC bouncer clients.

Thanks! That definitely does make sense and would save a lot of work (and mitigate the Let's Encrypt issue). The main reason why I'm using a Let's Encrypt certificate is because I use the Glowing Bear web client on lab computers at uni. It saves me having to manually trust the certificate when I log on.
