Thanks for asking about this. The device is standalone and does not use an active connection to a PC. The only PC software used is what was used during development to compile the code and program the PIC. I used MPLab for this, which is the official tool chain provided by Microchip.
The entire circuit is really just the demo board and one IO pin used as output. If you'd like to know more about the dev board circuitry, I'd recommend checking out the datasheet.
Hi Jon. Nice project. I'm trying to get some data from the can bus in my hyundai. Being a pic newbie I got the same prototype board you used. just to get me started and not mess up the hardware :-).. anyhow. I cant seem to get any data from the canbus.any chance of getting a peek of you're code to get me started ? Br Bjarke Fjeldsted

Certainly. I've updated my original post to include a link to the firmware source code on my Github page:

Good luck with you project!
Thx so much .. happy new year :-)
Hi Jon. Thanks for your info on your CAN BUS Sniffer.
I need to do something quite similar. I am very new to CAN bus, but I need to decode 3 state changes on the bus with minimal hardware.
Would you be prepared to help me, or at least give me direction.
I have been involved in the electronics arena all my working life, so not a complete dummy.
All the best with your current endeavours.
Thanks for the question, Kevin. I've responded via email.
