Wow this is so helpful. A long time ago I was hoodwinked into getting numismatics by a well known Gold Dealer who had well known spokespersons on Fox News. The name of the company starts with "G". They later got into real trouble with the judge telling them he cannot believe how little remorse they felt. I hated metals after that for years but your honest words here are such a breath of fresh air. I want to get back into them for inflation reasons.

We're so sorry you had this experience with one of the dishonest "rare coin" dealers who have preyed on investors over the years. They have done such tremendous damage to trust in our industry. The key is to be aware of the gold or silver melt value of what you are buying and to avoid high premium items, especially graded proofs, supposedly rare coins, and the like.

I just want to say that even though your article was written three years ago, it is as relevant today as it was when written, and extremely helpful for me. I love the transparency of your website and business approach. When it comes time for me to sell my collection, I would not consider anyone else to work with.

Very good article, and it confirms a suspicion I had for a while.

I purchased a collectable gold coin set back around 2009 (the price of gold was around $900/ounce, if memory serves) because the seller suggested that I go that route. He said that if I went the bullion route, there would be no way I could prevent it from being handed over to the government if the government did like it did in 1933 and order all citizens to turn in their gold and silver. After consideration, I decided to go the route of numismatic.

The thing is, I really kick myself in the pants to this day because I was in the baseball and football card collection hobby for a while when I was young, and I saw first-hand just how volatile the collectable market is. It was a stupid decision and I still kick myself for doing so.

But I can't cry over spilled milk. I will probably just cut my losses, find someone to buy it, and use that money for bullion.

Sorry to hear about the situation you describe. We've heard this often. The peddlers of "rare coins" have really given our whole industry a bad name and harmed so many investors. Here is more about the topic -- https://www.moneymetals.com...

Wow how honest. After my experience I felt that the whole coin market was filled with shysters. I can't believe how much they lie. Thanks for being different.

I don't blame you or the industry. Even if someone was peddling something dishonest, I should have had my radar up and watching it. Lesson learned.

I'm going to take them to a jeweller in my home town who also specializes in collectable coins and see how much it's worth right now. I likely will just sell them to cut my losses and then use the money I gain to buy more silver bullion from MMX. You guys have really been good to me so far, and I hope to continue to do business with you (I signed up for the monthly plan to buy bullion from you recently). Take care and have a beauty day.
