Excellent articulated
Thank you so much for taking the time to pen this piece. I have spent a lot of time thinking about inclusivity in the field of conservation as it is related to my job but you have made me think more deeply about my blind spots. I am the white foreigner you describe who wanted to come to Africa and although I was never planning to stay, I find myself here 15 years later wanting to be of service (also an alum of UCT ConBio MSc). This article needs to be shared widely in our circles and I hope that many more voices like yours will be heard as we move forward with our ears, minds and hearts open.
Thank you Karen
Thank you for sharing! A lot of VERY good points and very eloquently put!
Excellent piece. Thank you so much Merlyn.
Breaking down barriers, and ceilings, appears still to be our first priority. And each of our responsibility.
A few of your quotes sum up the crux of the problem well:
“if you do not have time for my issues, I do not have time for yours”
"People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care."
"Beliefs are as real as their consequences”
