Of course sometimes we don’t have much of a choice (like when your parents move as a kid and you have to move), but in this case the choice was there. Whether I make new friends or not, the pain of losing old friends is still there after all.

The choice should have been obvious. Don't take the drug and live your life as male like he intended in the first episode. He would have been an adult, could have had a job, earn money, play his games, meet people and everything else he did up until now as a girl and he tossed his masculinity away and adulthood for nothing. If I was an adult and I had to relive my middle school I have had depression.

From what I know, the dude was an anti-social unemployed shut-in before the events of the series. It’s unlikely that he would have gotten his life on the right track if left to himself
