Would Riley like to be treated by a physician whose training was less than rigorous, or have her car serviced by an incompetent mechanic, or cross a bridge designed by a sub-par engineer? The woman is deranged.

KlaatuHackenbush • 6 years ago

Posted this previously in response to Riley but worth repeating:
Professor Donna Riley; remember someone named Freud? He described
something called "penis envy" in little girls that eventually resolves
itself as femininity and the creative power of the female is
internalized and embraced...IF someone matures. However, you might also
like to note that he once said: "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".

Given that you are in a field that REQUIRES rigor or "bad things" will
happen you should take a modified version of the "Newtonian Bowling
Ball Test Of Reality". In your variation you have to calculate where
you will stand so the bowling ball misses your head by 6 inches as it
falls to its impact point. What was that? Oh, no problem, you would
rather have 10 inches? Ok 10 inches. Here is the structure of the usual
test: Using Newtonian mechanics the impact point of a bowling ball
that rolls down a ramp of known length and angle on the roof of a tall
building of known height is calculated. The purveyor of “no such thing
as objective reality” or other variants of toxic subjectivity must stand
on that spot.
Almost forgot to mention; one of YOUR students must do the calculations. Preferably a "social justice" admission.

Already that way here in California.

This is BS to justify mediocrity. Women and POC can't hack it in engineering so they need to eliminate high standards. Watch for catastrophic effects.

Grace • 6 years ago

I actually believe that is the purpose of this line of thought. They want to return us to the Middle
Ages. This is a good start in a long line of good starts.

Consider for instance some comfortable English professor defending Russian totalitarianism. He cannot say outright, ‘I believe in killing off your opponents when you can get good results by doing so’. Probably, therefore, he will say something like this:

‘While freely conceding that the Soviet regime exhibits certain features which the humanitarian may be inclined to deplore, we must, I think, agree that a certain curtailment of the right to political opposition is an unavoidable concomitant of transitional periods, and that the rigors which the Russian people have been called upon to undergo have been amply justified in the sphere of concrete achievement.’

- George Orwell (1946)

In other words, Riley doesn't want merit used. Like a typical Leftist she wants the standards lowered or more discrimination against white males to achieve success for minorities.

You can take any test. I don't care what the test is. It could be a civil service test, SAT, promotional exam or real estate. The results will be the same. Asians will score first, whites second, Hispanics third and blacks last.

Even if you dumb down the test blacks will still score last. Here is a true example:

I have a friend who is a retired police officer. Every time they had a promotional exam for the position of sergeant the results were whites scored the highest, Hispanics second and blacks last (there were no Asians in this area). So, the majority of supervisors were white. It was only a matter of time before blacks started to complain, with the aid of some white liberals, of course.

The excuses were the old standard that the test was racist or geared only for whites to succeed. Black advocacy groups, the NAACP, etc, all started to make a big stink about changing the test to make it fair. So, the police agency hired an outside group to come in and examine the existing test and "re-do" it so that the test wasn't "racist". This was done with the input from black officers, black think tanks, black advocacy groups, etc.

Eventually, the new promotional exam was announced with the approval from the black groups.

Guess what happened? whites scored first, Hispanics second and blacks last.

In order for blacks to get promoted they were basically given a promotion. The command staff separated whites, Hispanics and blacks. So, when they took the test blacks weren't competing against anyone but other black officers. The top scores from each group were tallied. Then the agency would pick an officer from the white group, an officer from the black group and an officer from the Hispanic group. Never mind the fact that the top score in the black group could have been a 71%, and overall, measured up against the other groups he would never have been promoted.

AN outside group was hired to find out exactly why blacks weren't scoring high. It was simple. There was no racism or discrimination on the test against blacks. The group found that blacks didn't study. Period. Black family's put little, if any emphasis, on studying or education. The study showed whites studied the most hours and many formed study groups.

Blacks didn't crack open a book. Or, if they did, it was short lived.

Seen a lot of that in the SF Bay Area.

It was rigor in science, engineering, medicine, and technology that made possible the very existence of these useless people.

WSG57 • 6 years ago

So Prof Riley is asserting that 2+2 only equals 4 if you are of a certain color or sexual preference and that 2+2 could equal 0 or 6 depending on who is doing the calculations ?!? Yeah -sure ! SARC/ off.

Ask her if she isn't glad for educational rigor in aeronautical engineering next time she gets on an airplane.

RoccoBarbella • 6 years ago

Yes, as long it's the airplane she's in, but everyone else has to ride the diversity airplane.

apparently this 'notably' white female, Donna Riley (at least I'm guessing that this creature is white) didn't get the memo. what memo? the one put out by the DNC in 1972 that declared white men to be third rate citizens, undeserving of any and all rights accorded to females, coloreds, gay folks and the rest of the endless list of 'victims' these alt-left freaks can 'think' of. by far and away, the most privileged people in this country are white females, who are given every leg up, every 'go to the head of the class', every preference for jobs and every other 'privilege' that one can name. right behind them are the blacks who are the beneficiaries of the exact same benefits with the added benefit of never having to assume blame for anything, and I do mean anything. the other victims line up in the 'pecking order' of being special as determined by their voting power at the polls, as this is the one and only reason that the DNC chooses to benefit anyone. oh, and btw, this hideous treatment of white men has been going on for the past 45 years and we all see the sickening results it has wrought.
a nation that treats its most productive citizens, white men, with this sort of treatment is a dead nation. . . morally, ethically and spiritually. its nothing more than a 'sitting duck' for a fascistic force such as Islam to fill the void.

American • 6 years ago

Can't tell what she is. She is however more white than my spouse, who by the way is an excellent teacher, who has obtained excellent results in the past and was nationally recognized for such.

I resent her stupidity or am angered by her calculated attempt at psychological/political warfare.

What do you want in an engineer? If they are structural engineer, you want them to understand materials, statics, & dynamics, so that they will build structures that you can safely use. Learning all that takes discipline and rigor.

If it did not take discipline and rigor it would be based solely on desire and we know that is true. If it were we would have 7 billion engineers, 7 billion doctors, etc.

Riley is a moron.

WSG57 • 6 years ago

I agree up to your last sentence. She is not a moron but most certainly a nihilist. It isn't stupidity that drives most Progressives- it IS hate.

WSG57 • 6 years ago

I'm not trying to pick a fight nor dispute your analysis. There has been a tendency by some Conservatives to cast the modern Left as stupid, failing to see predictable bad outcomes to their policies, etc., etc. . If we intend to win this war - and it is a war - for this Republic underestimating the enemy is not a winning strategy. The modern Progressive movement fully intends to destroy this country- and everyone who supports the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Among other things I would call that evil.

Marxists have to destroy all standards because they can't compete and are envious of anyone successful. Send your child to Trade School. It's a better investment.

very true. that's why the late, not so great Soviet Union 'imploded' upon itself after a mere 74 years of existence.

American • 6 years ago

Would have happened sooner, but WW2 rejuvenated it.

The War encouraged patriotism by necessity and kept the inherent contradictions of the system at bay.

mahgan • 6 years ago

Doubtful that the so-called "Prof." Riley ever read Marx. She is wrong on all fronts. The best performing students in the fields of "rigor" such as mathematics and science are East Asians--hardly "white men".

http://www.businessinsider....

What would Riley tell Esther Okade who seems to have a natural bent for the areas of "rigor"(google the name). Or this POC sample: Google their names. Akintunde Akinwande, Kunle Olukotun, Jonathan Farley, Sylvester Gates, Adebisi Agboola, Wole Soboyejo, Adepoju Adeleke, Tidjane Thiam, and many others.

Or in Africa where those who are that inclined do not see rigor as a thing to be avoided.

Fritz • 6 years ago

They have that contradiction licked now, they just reclassified East Asians as being white. Other then beating up on the U.S Government for the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the WW2 internment of American citizens of Japanese ancestry (which was struck down by the U.S Supreme Court in 1943, hence the system did correct itself) for political indictments, they really have no interest in anyone East Asian. The reasons are simple, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, and Vietnamese, Filipinos, etc. bay and large are too self reliant, and too resourceful, they don't make a good dependency class of perennial victims.

Defund Higher Education. It has failed America. Starve out those Rat's Nests of Liberals. They have done too much damage to our country. If people have to pay their hard earned money for this then they will become better consumers. On the brighter side maybe this Social Justice Warrior will have a huge student loan trailing her for ages and ages...

Their structural engineering will be on par with that of the Arabs

What does the good professor think of academic rigor in the engineering disciplines as she boards an airplane, applies the brakes in her car, or drives over a bridge?

john Barr • 6 years ago

my second grader did her homework and used the skills we learned at home on regrouping- teacher sent a note to me to not let her do that because the rest of the class was not there yet--so we left public schools- and common core-went to private school and she skipped a grade--she is an"A" student in advanced material

seewithyourowneyes • 6 years ago

It's a free country. You want to live by "other ways of knowing?" - Fine. - But content yourself to live by the fruits of those subjective and non-scientific "ways of knowing;" stop complaining that you're not getting your fair share of the fruits of science.

Remind me NEVER to drive over a bridge built by one of these, "rigor"-less engineering graduates who are filled with hate and contempt for the hard limits of physics and engineering and therefore will design structures that "feel empowered", but are actually empowered to carry the loads they were meant to carry.

I read this infuriating article and wrote my infuriated comments. Then I read it once more and tried really hard to see Ms Riley's point of view. As usual, I concluded that this sort of piece reads like a therapy session masquerading as a work of scholarship. But it also struck me that her writing might be a poem trapped in the clumsy overshoes of critical theory. Comparing mathematical rigor with social boundaries and erect penises seems ludicrous when posed as high scholarship, but it might work in a poem. Not the tired old rat-a-tat-tat of angry rap, but a lyric poem. Or it might work as a motif woven through a short story or popular song about personal experience. I'd think it would be much more moving and effective as art, than marching in the leaden prose of critical theory.
Isn't that what metaphor is all about, finding similarity in disparate objects? And a good metaphor does give you a kind of elation, the high of an insight you can't quite put into words, Ms Riley's "alternate way of knowing," in fact. I'm all for that. But I'd suggest Ms Riley try linking math and social strata and penises more evocatively through poetry, rather than through scholarly commentary on engineering education. Of course, to do that she'd have to accept the very demarcation between academic disciplines to which she is objecting in this piece.

seewithyourowneyes • 6 years ago

Oh, those evil, evil demarcations and boundaries! Let's do reduce our perceptions to one huge undifferentiated blob. Let's reduce truth to truthiness and math to mathiness.
I'm not a religious person, but I recall from childhood some lines from Genesis about creation - and they're all about boundaries and demarcations. God separating the earth from the heavens, the light from the darkness, etc etc. Those lines strike me as a good metaphor for the birth of human intelligence - perceiving, naming, categorizing. But the Left wants to replace homo sapiens with homo obedient, a creature who will see only what he's told to see.
