Were clan names of slave owners in the West Indies given West Indians who were once their slaves repatriated to the UK by the British Government after the war?  Did this automatically mean they became members of clans and were given the names of such clans

I believe the short answer is no.  However there are on record names of ex slaves that have Scottish names but don't believe there was any hard and fast rule about this.  As to being a member of a clan technically anyone can become a member of a particular clan where they feel the have an association with it.  Being a member of a clan does not mean you are a blood relation or are related to the Chief.

My last name is Roy - how can I find out what our clan's tartan is?

AlastairMcIntyre • 11 years ago

I'm not aware of a Roy tartan. The key to finding your tartan is to go to our Tartans page and use either of the two tartan search engines. If that doesn't work then use our site search engine to look for your surname and see if it's associated with another clan. Like I entered "Clan Roy" into our site search engine and that revealed a link to Clan Robertson under which Roy is listed as a sept. So it would seem you could wear their tartan. Hope this helps.

how do i find out which clan the name letters is associated

AlastairMcIntyre • 10 years ago

Normally I'd suggest you enter the name into our site search engine but in this case you're going to find almost 10,000 links and that's simply because the word is used in so many other contexts. About the only way to search for such a name on our site would be to go to http://www.electricscotland... and use the find on page option within your browser.

However you should be aware that some 75% of Scots have no clan association at all and in this case I am unable to find a connection. So unless you are prepared to work through all the some 10,000 links you may have some problems finding out a connection.

My boyfriend was born in Scotland and his last name is Alban. Is there a clan that this name was associated with?

AlastairMcIntyre • 6 years ago

Alban is actually a country rather than a clan. You can read about this at http://www.electricscotland...
Using our site search engine for “Albin” you’ll find some 512 links to that name.
Alastair

My mother’s maiden name was Aikman, which is probably a sept. I’m trying to find out to which clan the Aikmans are linked.

I did a quick search of the name on my site using out own search engine and found some 322 pages with that name on them. It would seem your name had connections with Clan Carruthers. See https://www.electricscotlan...
