Once again, amazing work!!! I am in awe of your skills. I think I have access to Lightroom at work, if so I'm going to jump in and try this. Thanks!

Marcia Ritzma • 10 years ago

Wow Donnie I am so excited to learn you have done this in LR!! I must begin a new project & start building a collection for 2016. Journaling is the part I will need serious effort to accomplish. Thank you for this blog! Love your books!!

Stewart Hudnall • 10 years ago

Okay so I cloned the repo and got it on my computer, but what are the next steps to have it run and pull the images with metadata? Thanks!

Donnie Ray Jones • 10 years ago

You should be able to just open a terminal prompt to that directory and run:

* gem installer bundler
* bundle install

Then you can run the rake command as outlined on the github README. It creates copies of your images in a new folder instead of overwriting your images in Day One.

I've only run this on my machine, but I'm pretty confident it will work because modern Macs OS come bundled with the necessary software you need (git, ruby, rake, etc). If it doesn't work let me know.

Stewart Hudnall • 10 years ago

This is the error message I get:

ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError)
You don't have write permissions for the /Library/Ruby/Gems/2.0.0 directory.

Donnie Ray Jones • 10 years ago

Ah... Try 'sudo gem install bundler'

Stewart Hudnall • 10 years ago

Worked like a charm. Now I'm just trying to figure out how to get the metadata to be automatically put into the text box. I swear I try everything before I come back to you...

Donnie Ray Jones • 10 years ago

Oh there was one step I had to do to populate them. It's on one of the menu items (don't have it in front of me at the moment). Some way to tell it load captions from the metadata. You also have to have a layout selected that includes text by each photo. If you can't figure it out let me know and I'll look tomorrow.

Hey I just discovered a bug and submitted a fix on github, so make sure to pull in those changes.

The bug caused some entries to be skipped if they shared the same date and time with another entry.

Wish I had discovered this bug before I spent $150 on books! :(

Stewart Hudnall • 10 years ago

Oh shoot! Hopefully you didn't miss too many entries because of it.

Hey Stewart, I've updated my web app to support Day One 2 and would love any feedback you can give that would make it better. https://dayone.donnierayjon...

Danny Tucker • 10 years ago

Hey good work! What are your thoughts on how Day One v2 impacts on this? Now that we can only use their sync service. Thanks Donnie.

Donnie Ray Jones • 10 years ago

In v2 there's an export feature which we can use. I'm working on that but progress is slow at the moment. I hope to find some time to complete it soon.

They have also said that an API is on their roadmap for v2. That may make it even easier.

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Hi Danny, I just pushed an update to my app that works with Day One v2. https://dayone.donnierayjon...

Liz • 9 years ago

This is amazing work Donnie and exactly what Im hoping to create. I've been following your posts for a while but haven't had time to make my book yet. Do you have any updates on how to create the book in lightroom or should i follow the original instructions link on this post. I love the idea of not wasting page space but i am a bit of a novice when it comes to all this!

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Hi Liz,

I need to come up with step-by-step instructions on how to do this but I haven't yet (it's a pretty time consuming process). I'm also trying to find time to get the existing app at http://dayone.donnierayjone... to work with Day One 2.0. I'll post an update here when I make some progress.

liz • 9 years ago

awesome thanks a mil :)

Priscilla Chung • 9 years ago

Your book looks amazing and I've been looking for a way to do this. But I'm so new at this that these guidelines are confusing to me. Is there a simpler way for me to learn how to do this? Something step by step possibly. I would be willing to pay for something like that. Anything that makes my life simpler. =)

Kelsey • 9 years ago

I would LOVE an app that worked with Day One 2.0 :) Please keep us posted. I export my journal from Day One 2.0 to PDF but there is a lot of whitespace. Thanks for working on this!!

Priscilla Chung • 9 years ago

Yea, I am having difficulties as well. I like the layouts that you can have 2 posts on one page instead of having whitespace.

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Hi Priscilla, I just pushed out an update to work with DayOne v2. https://dayone.donnierayjon...

Claire Mcloughlin • 9 years ago

Hi Donnie

Great that you have an update! I had subscribed to the feed! However I can't seem to get it to work. I have two journals in my day one and just want to make a book with one of them (my 'Daisy' journal), so when I do the export it is called Daisy, json
When I try and drag and drop it in to your page it says 'Oops! That doesn't seem to be a Day One JSON Export.'

Any ideas?

Thank you

Claire

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Hi Claire, are you using the iPhone app or the Mac app? When I export on either of those (to JSON) I get a zip file containing a .json file and a photos folder. That's what the app is looking for. I'm not sure which export option you're using... could you give more detail on that?

For me, on the Mac, I can go to File > Export > JSON to get the export. On my iPhone, it's under the settings gear icon > Import / Export > Export JSON. Eventually I'll get some screenshots showing this process.

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Also, it might be you have what you need already. If that Daisy.json is alongside other .json files and a photos folder, then the app is just wanting you to drag the folder containing those files. The app will detect multiple journal files and prompt you to select one before continuing.

Claire Mcloughlin • 9 years ago

Hi Donnie

Thank you for getting back to me. I am using the mac app and getting the export via the same process as you....

I have attached a screenshot with what i get from my export and the message on your page...I have tried to drag and drop both the photos file and the Daisy.json file together and individually. I have also tried to drag and drop the zip file but always get the same message - see other screenshot.

Thank you so much for your help with this!

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Oh ok gotcha. Try dragging over that "Export - Daisy" folder.

Claire Mcloughlin • 9 years ago

Hello!

yes that does work - can't believe I didn't try that!

However, for some reason it is only pulling in one photo per day when on some days I have more than one. Should it be doing this? It has all the comments and an entry for each day but then just a single photo on all of them...

Thank you again :)

Claire

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

It's not super intuitive yet... I've spent hours today trying to get it to work with the zip file and finally got it to work! But it's suuuuper slow loading the images that way. So I'll keep playing with that. In the meantime just keep using the containing folder when you drag and drop.

I've set it up to only render the first image in the post. It gets pretty complex to do more than 1 image per entry. At some point I might can make it more flexible, but for now it'll only render the first image in the post.

Claire Mcloughlin • 9 years ago

No problem - thank you so much for all your hard work so far! I will keep subscribed to the post :)

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Hi Kelsey, I just pushed an update out. Give it a whirl and let me know if you have problems. https://dayone.donnierayjon...

Megan Eads • 9 years ago

I have been trying to do this exact thing, and would love any updates you have on how to do this in Lightroom using DayOne v.2. I have been cutting and pasting and it takes way too long. Thanks!

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Hi Megan,

I just pushed out an update that should work with Day One v2. It's not a Lightroom version, but should work well enough. It's what I'm going to use going forward. https://dayone.donnierayjon...

Megan Eads • 9 years ago

This only works if you have one picture per post... right? I had several posts with a few pictures and only one showed up on the pdf. So... if I want more than one picture per post I'm thinking I would need to make a collage and then upload it as one jpg...

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

That's right. I'm trying to figure how to work with multiple photos but have not come up with any solid ideas yet.

Donnie Ray Jones • 9 years ago

Not sure if anyone has subscribed to updates on this post, but I have updated the app to work with Day One 2.0. It's available here: https://dayone.donnierayjon...

Curious whether you're still using this technique to print your day one journal and photo books? Brilliant webapp, as we face the same problem with gaps on the page with Day One. But we like it as a way to print off memories of our kids. Only having one photo per post is a bummer. With all the print your instagram feed options, I'm wondering whether creating a private instagram feed might be an easier way to document memories, but I hate to lose the text-only entries. Since the last post was 4 years ago I'm wondering if this is still your preferred method?

Donnie Ray Jones • 5 years ago

We haven't been keeping the journals up unfortunately :( I wish we had. But I do know that Day One has built-in support for printing now, so that's what I'd look into today.

eric stoevenbelt • 4 years ago

Hello Donnie, thanks for your work! does your program still work to get files in Lightroom (so i can edit)? I can get it working but the export folder turns out empty? Should I have the program in a specific folder?
