Need credit card

Bill Collectors Hate Me • 5 years ago

Capital One credit cards are always a good place to start. Even if you are not approved for an unsecured card, they offer two secured credit card options.

Hello I have bad credit and I’m in the process of fixing it I’ve gotten all negative item removed I just need to start building it. I’ve applied for several credit cards but didn’t get approve what would you recommend?

Credit.com Credit Experts • 5 years ago

Hi there, if you can't get approved for a regular unsecured card, then you might want to try with a secured card. We offer some of these through our trusted advertisers at https://www.credit.com/cred...

Christen Little • 6 years ago

What happens when denied for a secured credit card? I've applied for a reputable (citi one) secured credit card, one that required a $200 deposit as was denied both times I applied (months apart from each other)

Richard Finzel • 5 years ago

Try other banks. CapitalOne is very good to those new to credit. You can use their prequalified offer tool to see if you are pre approved. Also they have great secured card

Credit.com Credit Experts • 6 years ago

Hi Christen, sorry to hear about that. Legally, the creditor has to tell you why they denied you, and will send you a letter stating why. Some reasons may be you have a bankruptcy or are going through one, or you don't meet the income requirement. More information at http://blog.credit.com/2015...

Christen Little • 6 years ago

They cited it as
1. No credit or low score - well yeah thats why I'm trying to improve my score from 512.
2. Too many account delinquent - there are 4, 2 of which I wasnt even aware of as I never received notice of the accounts going to collection...

Credit.com Credit Experts • 6 years ago

At that point, you may want to see if you can dispute some of the delinquent accounts on your report to see if it will help your score, or apply for a different secured card.

I cant get a credit card for the life of me im 46 never had a credit card and i cant figure out how to get one

Credit.com Credit Experts • 6 years ago

Hi Heather, thanks for your response. You can build credit by applying for a secured card, which means you put down a security deposit to act as your line of credit. In a lot of cases, the deposit is refundable. You can also ask someone like a close friend or family member to make you an authorized user on their credit card if they have good credit. A lot of companies report authorized users, so their credit history will show up on your credit reports. For more information on building credit, visit https://www.credit.com/cred...

The bulk of my debt is from medical bills i have one charge off from Sprint that shows up as being 3 years old however i havent had a sprint acct since 2008 or 2009

Jeanine Skowronski • 7 years ago

Hi, Joshua,

Most negative information, including charge offs, can stay on credit reports for up to 7 years (bankruptcy can stay on for up to 13.) Having said that, if the account is an error, you can dispute it with the credit bureaus. More on all of this here:

Jeanine Skowronski • 7 years ago

You're probably going to want to look into secured credit cards, which are designed specifically for people looking to build or rebuild credit. You can find more info here:

I can't get any cards, they say I have to many inquiries. What can I do or what do you recommend?

Credit.com Credit Experts • 7 years ago

Inquiries don't have as much of an effect on your score after they're 6 months old, so you may want to wait awhile before you apply for another card.

Nick • 7 years ago

Credit.com: Do you have any recommendations for a good debt settlement firm out their in the United States? I'm looking to go this route with my debts, and I am aware of the tax consequences of debt settlement, but I can take an insolvency exemption under the IRS Tax Code. Thank you!

Patricia • 7 years ago

Debt settlement is a bad idea...you're better off saving 40 to 50% of every that you have and set a limit yourself instead of paying a company 100% of what you owe to settle it for 20 to 30%

Reighn9 • 8 years ago

As per advice (and offers) I've been trying to get a good balance transfer card or personal loan to pay down high credit card balances. I receive "pre-approved" offers to pay these high balances, yet when I apply I am denied for having high balances and quite often given an alternate offer-a secured card. I don't see how a secured card is going to help me pay down high balances on my other cards. If I had the money to put on a secured card to open the account, I could just pay on a high balance card instead. What are these companies thinking offering me a secured card to pay of my high balances on my other cards? They also call this a great offer since they couldn't approve the original request.

I have 650 score and I want to what card will approve me for sure

John Warnke • 8 years ago

Hello. I recently got a secured credit card. I have 5 collections against me. Two of the three largest falling off in about 18 months. Total is 4700 in collections. One for about 1800 was first reported three years ago but they took out of my state taxes this year for it so it says it's only 3 months old now. I have no other credit on my file, cards, loans, ect. I've read about using under 30% of my credit for my card and paying right away. It's only a 300 limit. I can easily afford to get another and do the same. Wondering how much this will increase my scores and how much those collections will hurt it. Especially the one that says i made a payment

I am getting transferred to US shortly in an executive role but have no credit history. My work would involve a lot of travel so I need a card at the earliest.I use elite cards like Citi Prestige and Amex Gold back home. How can I get a good enough score in shortest amount of time to get equivalent cards in US

Credit.com Credit Experts • 8 years ago

You can try reaching out to your current credit card issuers and see if you can apply for a U.S. card that they offer. Some issuers do that: http://blog.credit.com/2016... Building good enough credit to get a credit card for good credit in the U.S. will take time, so if you're in it for the long haul, you can start with something like a secured credit card.

Hello.i wanted to know if i qualify for a Capital One Credit Card, My score is 602 .I have Secured Wellsfargo Credit Card but Capital send me a pre- approved offer.

mona19595 • 8 years ago

If you already have a secured credit card through Wellsfargo I would definitely NOT get a card through Capital One. One is enough for now. JMHO

Worked for me! I was able to get the Platinum and the Quicksilver an that was where my score was at.

Hi: I am a Canadian citizen living in Canada and visiting US often. I have excellent credit score here (814). Is there a way to get a credit card in the US? I am willing to even pay $ 500-1000 as deposit for a secured card too. Could you please suggest a bank/ company for that? Thanks
John

I cant get any credit cards because of my student loans and score, is there a way around(?) this so that i can built some credit. I couldnt even get a Target card because my credit was so short and not very good.

Justin Thompson • 7 years ago

Federal Student Loans can only be discharged through proof of permament disability or death. If you have SSI/SSDI, Disabled veteran then get the forms from The U.S. Dept. of Edjamacation.
Really going to college in this country and going into debt just screws over a person. As a society we are actually going backwards because previous generations did not have to go get some bachlor's degree to get a decent paying job, they could buy a new car, buy a house, and get plenty of credit.
Unfortunately we, as a society have become fake, shallow, people that just want to project our false importance onto others.
If going to college is going to put you into thousands in debt just don't bother.
Another option is for you to consider Government service, try AmeriCorps, they have you do so many hours of work at a non-profit and then pay some of your loans, working for the Government is another option, work as a teacher, firefighter, police maybe prison guard and they discharge a specified amount of your loans for each year of service.

Sbyrd • 7 years ago

this is false. I had a chapter 7 bankruptcy discharged in december of 2016 and they wiped out over half of my federal student loans.

Jeanine Skowronski • 7 years ago

There are a few exceptions to the rule. More here:

I built up my credit with the "shopping cart trick" Google it. It works and helped build my credit tremendously!!

Amber J O'Neil • 8 years ago

Look in to getting a Secured Credit Card through your bank. A secured credit card uses money you place in a security deposit account as collateral. Your credit line is based on your income, ability to pay and the amount of your cash collateral deposit.

You may be able to get a secured credit card

Hi my name is Alice J.. My question is if I have a debit card and my credit score is very low can I I use my debit card as a credit card. Is that the way to build credit.

Jeanine Skowronski • 8 years ago

Hello, Alice,

Debit cards don't build credit since you're using the money in your bank account to make purchases, not a line of credit that's been extended to you by the bank. If you're looking to build credit, you could try applying for a secured credit card or seeing if someone will add you as an authorized user to an existing credit card account. You can find more tips for rebuilding credit here:

Edna Smith • 8 years ago

I got my first credit card when I was 18 then it was much harder. I remember it was a JC Penny because as a child with 5 brothers and sisters that is the card my mom and dad had. They at first did not want to issue me one at all. I called and spoke to the most athorative person they had. I told them I needed to build credit. just give me a 200 dollar line of credit. It worked. I would say start by asking for a low credit rate. I even told my friend when her son was going away for college She was wondering weather or not to get him a card. I told her get him a 500 dollar line of credit for emergencies. car trouble flat tire. So she took my advice. She was surprised she said she did not even know you could request a small credit limit.

Have you applied for any secured cards? Those do require that you have enough money for a deposit, but they are relatively easy to apply for. You can find more information here:

Brittany Stewart • 8 years ago

Hi. Ive been trying for moths to get a credit card to help rebuild my credit. Other sites that I use for my credit score monitoring say my score is a 563 or 568 but credit.com says I have a 617. I don't know what is right. I can not get approved for any cards even the worst. I need help finding my true credit score and how long I should wait to apply for a card again.

Credit.com Credit Experts • 8 years ago

Brittany —
there is no one true credit score but rather hundreds of models. When you compare, it's important to make sure you are using the same model when you check scores. (See Why Do I Have So Many Credit Scores?) As for getting a card, you may want to shop for a card for people who need to boost their credit. A secured card is one idea. You can learn more about them here:
How Secured Cards Help Build Credit

But basically, the best way to improve your credit is to pay bills on time and to keep balances low relative to your credit limit.

Hi I'm trying to find a credit card to pay off bills, I'm having a hard time finding one my credit score us very poor it's a 516 any ideas please??

Gerri Detweiler • 8 years ago

You're going to have a difficult time finding a consolidation loan with that credit score. My suggestion is that you talk with a credit counseling agency. They may be able to help you put together a plan and their programs don't require good credit. Please read: 6 Places to Get Free Help With Your Credit Problem
