Looks like an almost perfect device.

Suggestions for PB Go v2
1. fingerprint scanner
2. 180° hinge
3. they could possibly shave $50 off by offering a non-touch version

poorplayer • 4 years ago

It's probably a fine machine, but it's not for me. I like to watch movies via presentation mode - no keyboard visible. It's still too expensive at $649. I like to avoid dongles. But most of all, I dislike intensely the lack of any external SD storage. Naturally mention is made of Google Cloud storage, but Google is in the information-gathering business, and frankly I don't trust Google enough to put certain kinds of data on the cloud. I want that storage on an external drive, and I think the lack of a microSD slot is a very subtle and sneaky way to passively encourage users to put more of their data on Google's servers. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you want, but if your main source of revenue is other people's data, it only makes sense to try to get people to put as much of their data out there as possible.

I just got the Slate on sale which I love. I really want this clamshell though also. I really wish this had a biometric sign in...I thought for sure it would. Also, I wish they had a third color....like a grey or chrome color--same as the pixelbook. I'd pick this up in a second.

Even with the Core m3 model, you don’t need to fear performance issues at all. Our test unit is the Core i5 model, but I have no question that the Core m3 model will perform very, very well.

So the review was of the Core i5 model, but the recommendations are for the entry level Core m3 with high confidence that it will be just fine? I don't think that is helpful. "I've performed my road test on the V8 Mustang, but I think the inline 4 engine will be just fine...because after all, you're just going to be tooling around town at 40mph." :P

I don't know if it is accurate to claim that the m3 Slate was a "tad" sluggish. It was extremely sluggish for many (including for some high-profile YouTubers). It was so bad that Google dropped it pretty quickly. If there has been a "massive" cleanup of CrOS support for the m3 Slate, it would be great if you could do a follow-up review of it and compare it to what it was like when you first reviewed it.

migsmog • 4 years ago

Yeah, the entry level Slate model last year had a Celeron processor which was panned by most tech reviewers and was subsequently discontinued. Entry level model for the Pixelbook Go is the m3.

As someone with an i5 Slate and the m3 Pixelbook Go I can vouch that performance is similar on both for my use case. The m3 will be sufficient for anyone who is not a power user

mmpaca • 4 years ago

I don't know that your comments about the slate are that realistic - the deservedly criticised bottom of the barrel model of the slate had a Celeron processor (for God's sake what were they thinking?) not an m3. I've been using an ASUS C434 for several months now - it has an m3 processor and I can confirm that it is a fine CB with no processor based hesitations/limitations/lags whatever. In my view Robby's confident recommendation for the m3 based Pixel Go is spot on for general users.

I am sorry but I will bring some reality check here:
1. Are you a corporate with a lot of cash and no sustainability policies? If the answer is Yeah?.. ?? That's for you!
2. Are you a startup ? DON'T BUY

I bought the previous product and I am in EMEA market. There is no repair centre available wtf. This is junk if you break it.
There is no repair centre available except if you want to gamble that's your local can repair it correctly when Google they can't .
I am so pissed off about it. If I knew!?

I love Google product but this is a MASSIVE fell off. Why is this no public knowledge? It is so much of a fell off. Why aren't you talking about it?!

Maybe I am wrong and somebody can help.
Please reach out.

my pixelbook is junk now. Broken screen no quote no repair - just junk.

It's hard to believe because it is such a wonderful product.

Before I broked it by accident, I tried to suck it up that I couldn't use Photoshop or illustrator on it. That's shit man!! If I knew.

So What's the most stupidest Way to spend 1k ?! Buy a Pixelbook :)

aaphid • 4 years ago

Sounds like you've had a rough start.

If you've broken the display you still can connect the PB to an external monitor.
If you're feeling adventurous most displays are easy to replace although this one does look a little more challenging

You'd want to buy something like this
https://www.ebay.com/itm/12...
or
https://www.ebay.com/itm/12...

I've never tried to run Illustrator on a Chromebook but you might want to try
Gravit - https://www.makeuseof.com/t...
or
Vectr - https://chromeunboxed.com/c...

As for Photoshop you could try
Photopea - https://www.photopea.com/
although I use
Pixlr - https://pixlr.com/web

I have an insurance boy!. They will replace and I am left with the broken device. How sustainable is that? I am sorry to sound pissoff but it's a reality that US customer don't have put up with anymore! I am a very conscious customer and purchasing device that can not be repair just for a screen is madness. In Europe out of warranty you can't get it repaired at all. They let us throw it out in the bin as soon as there is a broken screen. I think you don't get my point.
We can't be using device for 6 months or 2 years only. It is not sustainable!

Hi! Not taking into account the price, between Pixebook Go i5 16GB, Acer Spin 713 i5 8GB and this C13 Ryzen 7 16GB, which one would you recommend most for professional routines?
I live in Brazil and I will have to import a Chromebook, because the models for sale here are mediocre.
Thanks!

Jeremy • 4 years ago

Thanks for the review. Here's the real question... With a BF deal offering the Pixel Slate (which, with fixes issued by Google over the past year, seems to have resolved so of it's initial concerns) starting from $450 for the M3, or $650 for the i5, both including the pen and keyboard, is the Pixelbook Go still the go-to, or is the Slate such an insanely good deal at BF pricing that it's the better value? Higher resolution screen (with still solid battery life), FPS, pen support, option to use as tablet all seem like solid pluses.

Another Knight • 4 years ago

I have both and I would say the slate is the more premium model and at a better price but is a different form factor. I use go for school. If you don't type a lot o definitely recommend the slate.

Amir Sadollah • 4 years ago

Hey Jeremy,

You are right that the Pixel Slate has seen some insane deals lately and will be getting yet another one for Black Friday. I feel that it is the go-to over the Pixelbook Go, simply because it offers so much more. Furthermore, I have to disagree with the other gentleman who responded to you saying that the Pixel Slate is only the better option if you don't do a lot of typing. I recently purchased the Pixel Slate m3, 64GB model which came bundled with the folio keyboard for $450 off, and additionally purchased the Brydge G-Type keyboard which is currently discounted down to $79 from $159. So, I was able to purchase the Pixel Slate and both keyboards for the insanely low grand total of $608. In addition to that, I sold my Pixelbook for $585 on Ebay, so realistically the entire package cost me less than $30. There is no good argument that the Pixelbook Go is the better option when the Pixel Slate, which has the same July 2026 EUA date as the PB Go, can be had for such insanely low prices.

Another Knight • 4 years ago

I still think the pixelbook go is better for a student because the google made keyboard needs a flat surface which may not always be available. I have used the g-type keyboard but returned due to concern about its long time use with being pushed against the pixel slate screen. I think the slate though is the better deal, but I really do enjoy using my go that gives me a great typing experience and portability.

Amir Sadollah • 4 years ago

Interesting point that you bring up regarding the Brydge g-type keyboard pushing against the Pixel Slate screen. I have not heard this brought up as an area of concern before. I assume you are referring to when the Pixel Slate is closed, and you are concerned that the keyboard's keys may damage the Pixel Slate screen? In all honesty I don't see that ever happening, and given the fact that Brydge worked very closely with Google in constructing in the g-type, I am quite comfortable stating that there is nothing to be concerned about with regard to this and that Brydge would not have allowed such a major design flaw to occur.

I do however agree with you regarding the folio keyboard. It is a joy to type on in my opinion, however you are 100% correct that you must have a flat surface to type on or the keyboard is essentially useless.

Another Knight • 4 years ago

With the brydge keyboard the issue is when sliding the tablet into place with the dock. The pressure can cause damage to the screen. To get an idea look at the surface pro version of the keyboard. I have used the g type keyboard as well and the other concern was the rubber around the clips started to peel off on mine. I wish the keyboard docked like the surface book because then I would have held onto my slate instead of the go.

Would you say the M3 is the same performance as an i3?
I dont see the need for an i5 on a Chromebook, but a i3 is just right. The M3 is new to me So a I am curious to see of it would be the same performance as an i3.

Paul Sciandra • 4 years ago

I have the Go M3 and also the i5 Pixelbook....there is absolutely no difference in performance.

Lady Dae • 4 years ago

(Yeah, yeah....late to the convo as normal.)
Preface, coming from the Asus C434 (m3/8GB)...Easy usage, with 5-8 tabs open, no apps, only browser
Pros:
Love that its lighter (why I bought it)
Keyboard feel is different, but not bad or good, just different
Keys are backlit BLACK<---Asus, pay attention here...backlit silver is BLAH!
Love that it sits flat
Love the Google Asst integration, I use GA ALL DAY LONG!!
And it's a Google branded device...yep a fan-girl here!
Ports: works for me, I'm a minimalist and only need to charge and print
Not so pro:
The screen seems to have a lower refresh rate. There's more blur than my C434.
The ABSOLUTE CON (for me):
The clunky, loud trackpad!!! OMG!!! I ususally use touch anyway on my C434 rarely actually click, but with this I seem to click more and it sounds like a loud cheap toy....uhhhh (Why do 99% still have a click instead of pad with haptic feedback...that I can turn off?!)

Any-hoodles, my 2cents...overall "Like" it...not quite at the "love" stage.

@Robby: Based on this review, is it fair to say that the Pixelbook Go is your "GoTo Choice/Daily Driver"?

David G. Smith • 4 years ago

Though it is mentioned by another reader, Robby, this review, and every discussion about any Chrome OS device, MUST include information about the AUE date. Thank you in advance.

Does Google even sell an extended warranty?

Leon • 4 years ago

If what you say is true (and I have no reason to believe it is not), based on the following, there is a MAJOR Class Action Suit in the making for a hungry lawyer (the following is direct from the Google Website):

Get your device fixed
If you purchased your device in the US or Canada, you can have your out of warranty device repaired at an authorized walk-in repair center as listed below. The out of warranty repair service is available for a minimum of 3 years after the date of the purchase of the device. Batteries are not user replaceable, please contact the authorized walk-in repair centers for batteries replacements.

US: Visit uBreakiFix.com to find a walk-in repair location in your area.

OK. As someone that actually owns and paid for, a Pixelbook Go and a Slate, I have to say that the Pixelbook Go is BY FAR my ChromeBook of choice, the keyboard is fantastic. And the M3 works just fine. The slate I have is an i5. Yes you can from a $$ perspective buy a cheaper ChromeBook, you can not buy a better ChromeBook.

Amir Sadollah • 4 years ago

Exactly! Thank you so much for this reality check. I have owned the original Pixelbook since it came out in October 2017, and there is absolutely no way I would trade it in for this thing. Heck, there are even non-Pixelbooks that are cheaper than the Pixelbook Go and are far superior Chromebooks. Some Chromebooks that immediately come to mind are the Dell Inspiron Chromebook 14, the Acer Chromebook Spin 13 and 15, and the Samsung Chromebook Plus v2.

Seriously, I don't get the enthusiasm over the Pixelbook Go. It is way overpriced for what it offers, and there are far cheaper and better options.

I do want to get the 4k version,

disqus_AU0uzBZInr • 4 years ago

The test model was an i5; how is it cooled?

djfields1 • 4 years ago

It a fanless intel chip

EnchantedMeat • 4 years ago

Seems to me to be really expensive (even for the m3 model) for not having a 360 degree hinge and lacking stylus support. I'll be sticking with my C302 until something better comes out.

What do you mean by fixed? It is all in Cloud so you could log into another Chromebook and retrieve your info.

Or if their is an issue on the Chromebook, you can always Powerwash it and that will fix it 80% of time.

Guest • 4 years ago
Craig S • 4 years ago

That is a fair question to ask when you are spending $650 or more on a Chromebook. I will defer to the IFixIt team on this. However, the whole point of a Chromebook is simplicity and for your data to live in the cloud (Google Drive) so your info is easy to get to on multiple Chromebooks. Not many people want to tinker with Chromebooks, like they do with building Gaming Windows Machines.
