This is a good idea culturally and also to help new immigrants from Latin countries adjust to Illinois. This will help them feel welcome in the land of Lincoln. Good job guys!

I've never really understood why people fleeing Central America, and seeking asylum, don't seek it in Mexico. Doesn't Mexico care about its borders? Perhaps we should help them control their southern border as a way to deal with our own border problems.

Steve Bashakis • 1 year ago

The Mexican border with Central America is actually pretty solid, but they allow people fleeing horrible conditions to cross. Why on earth would those people want to stay in Mexico when they can come to the US?

Toivo • 1 year ago

So they're no longer seeking "asylum" when attempting to enter the US? They've already been given asylum in Mexico.

Steve Bashakis • 1 year ago

Sure but why would they pass up the opportunity to come to the US if they can? Not realistic to think they would pass it up. The murder rate in Mexico is double the murder rate of the US. They’d have to be nuts to stay there if they didn’t have to.

I'm just thinking of their "case" when they apply to enter the US. Would that be perjury, or false statements? At the US border they're no longer seeking asylum, but instead are seeking to circumvent the immigration quotas in place.

Steve Bashakis • 1 year ago

Yeah, I don’t think they’re actually doing any of that stuff on the border. I think they’re kind of just lining them up, taking down some information and that’s it.

I agree. They put a cloak of economic migrancy over their original asylum garb.

JeanSC • 1 year ago

Part of the motivation to end up in the USA is economic.

Steve Bashakis • 1 year ago

Yes, that and being allowed to breathe.

JeanSC • 1 year ago

People can breathe anywhere on Earth. In some places, the air pollution is so bad you need a mask.

Yeah, what I meant was a lot of central American countries, and I think some of the South American ones have death squads. Like Nicaragua. Do the wrong thing or make someone mad a pick up truck with guys eith shotguns shows up and get rid of a bunch of people. You know, like Mexico.

Some areas of the US seem to be heading in that direction...

Steve Bashakis • 1 year ago

Yeah, but we get what the people vote in there and then we’re stuck with it. Denying reality and refusing to accept the situation wont fix any of it.
