I also thought it was funny when Connaughton came out dressed like Woody Harrelson in "White Men Can't Jump".

Judges that throw out 10's like it's nothing (Why even have numbers under 7?). Judges that discuss what score they're going to give to each other. Judges that collude to attempt to make everyone a winner (aka. participation trophy). Judges that are just a year removed from being former teammates with contestants.

While AG has made the dunk contest interesting these past years, I feel the dunk contest had been dying and D-Wade's sneakiness pulled the plug. They've completely lost the trust of the fans, and judging by the reactions of other NBA players, other future participants. I don't plan on watching any future dunk contests. There's just no point when I know the judging is all a sham.

D-Wade thought he was doing his friend a favor, but Derrick Jones Jr. has to deal with everyone knowing he wasn't the rightful winner. How do I know AG was the rightful winner? Because of the 20,000 dropped jaws in that arena and the millions more at home after it was declared that AG lost.

Yes, D Wade not only did a disservice to the NBA and it's fans but also did a disservice to Jones Jr. It has to be awkward for him, even though he's a great dunker.

I'm not saying Jones didn't deserve it. I'm saying how can an event be judged if it has no rules? Everyone's confused every year by who should win because it's judged by 5 celebrities that can discuss with each other what they want to give for a score.

Even though I felt Gordon won last night, It's obvious that Jones Jr. loves dunking and acted like he would've dunked all night to put a show for the fans. Meanwhile, Gordon wanted the contest called after 4 dunks and didn't seem to want to continue on with the dunk off.

And I'm old enough to remember when the Soviet high jumper Valery Brumel was the first to break the 7 foot barrier back in the early sixties--an unfortunate motorcycle accident ended his career at the age of ~23 in 1965. And Gordon is not an Olympic high jumper, just a good NBA forward still looking for his first All Star Game qualification, which would depend on his team delivering.

Of course, in the high jump, your feet have to clear, not just your butt...

I don't know why Red didn't sign Brumel, before the motorcycle accident...

It seems like something Belichick would have done.

Let's credit Tacko's intuition, which bodes well for the future.
He knew just how far he had to duck his head...

CelticsKY • 4 years ago

I have a feeling Tacko was forced to master ducking at about 13 years old.

Dimitris-UK • 4 years ago

Yes, I agree. Gordon has now down two iconic dunks, probably two of the best 5 in the history of the contest and yet no title. That was ludicrous. The kid deserved it both times.

David Anthopoulos • 4 years ago

And he's a great player, who always (unfortunately) seems to shine against us. I like the kid.

D Wade is a fraud/cheater. He broke Kobe’s nose in an all star game on purpose, tried to break Rondo’s arm, made fun of Dirk for being sick in the finals, robbed the Bulls of millions of dollars by forcing a buyout so he could go play with Lebron again, and now rigs a dunking contest. Why does anyone like the guy? I just don’t get it.

TheBadGuy • 4 years ago

Hmmm. Wade's a hard one. I liked him because I thought he was better than lebron for awhile. I also liked that he scores 50 pts without a 3. Obviously the Lebron team up a started to change although it was more just Lebron I Hated. The Dirk thing was funny because Dirk destroyed them. My biggest issue with Wade is how people think he was better than Pierce. Pierce was way better, he just played against better competition the first half of his career

David Anthopoulos • 4 years ago

You're right of course, but he was a very good player in his prime, although he relied on athleticism more than other things, like brains and character. When that started to fade, he was done.

Aaron Gordon got robbed again. I personally thought he won in 2016 vs Lavine and then again tonight. But I enjoyed Tacko Time, Tacko's pants might rival Vinnie Sex Pants.

Some of us do listen to podcasts, I guess.

Celtics88MF • 4 years ago

Awesome to see Tacko there. TACKO!!!!!!

Derrick Jones and Aaron Gordon both put on a show, however Aaron Gordon got ROBBED AGAIN. He also got robbed back when Blake Griffin won cuz it was a fan vote that time (Griffin was more popular back then).

I feel like Wade did that on purpose. They never shouldve put a player from a former team on the judge panel.

In the end, this was probably one of the best dunk contests in recent years. They usually disappoint me, but this year wasn't bad.

CelticsKY • 4 years ago

I'm still trying to figure out why Chicago had to go get basketball players who went to high school there (D Wade, Isaiah Thomas, etc.) to represent their NBA all star city instead of getting past Bulls players. Did they treat their players so bad that Pippin is the only one they could get to agree to come back? Seems odd that the entire weekend has been focused on D Wade (a Heat legend) and Isaiah Thomas (a Piston legend).

TheBadGuy • 4 years ago

The only dunk contests I can really remember post Vinsanity days are one with Aaron Gordon

True, he was nasty. And a pretty good player when he was healthy on the warriors. He could get the the hoop quick and strong
