When i grew up in the burbs just north of Boston, back around the middle of the last century, there was a common phrase, "hot spook," that meant roughly the same thing as "live wire." It had zero racial meaning and was actually a positive statement and not at all negative. Decades later, i used the phrase in a conversation over drinks with a black man who was my boss at a major corporation in New York. He went ballistic and it was really never the same between us. I had not used the phrase in reference to him, but he could not separate his notion of the term from the reality of how I'd used it. My bad, obviously. He later took credit for an idea of mine and received a $20,000 bonus for it from the corporation. I did NOT then call him a "hot spook." Not even close to that.
