You can always fall back on a firearm if necessary and usually it is not necessary in todays events of Antifa and other left wing punks . As an old-timer with severely-reduced lung capacity I can assure you that I carry. I would prefer to never have to use it.

But, since a 'beat down' would undoubtedly prove fatal, I much prefer to plead self-defense. Ultimately, it's better to be tried by 12 than carried by six. Best of all, avoid locations and situations that might put you in danger.

I am an RVN vet, very fit, strong and healthy and capable and used to smoke as well. Then I got smart l Older guys over 70 or so I give a pass anybody else needs to use their brains, which is why you have it. I am almost 72 and can easily defeat most people here and at shooting as well !

I'm a licensed CPL carrier, female, 5'2" tall, 53 years old, chronic pain patient for the past 10 years with THE most painful medical condition known to the medical community. It's progressive and can go fill body, including to my internal organs if I'm not careful. An ant bite can trigger the reaction so badly I need to be hospitalized & placed on IV pain meds.

And you want someone like me to have an alternative first line of defense? Sorry, but that's not happening. The first time I'm assaulted with intent to harm, I will announce I have a weapon and intend to shoot if whoever did it does not back away. If they continue to assault, I point and fire.
I know the laws in my state. If it's a male, or I'm more vulnerable than the attacker, & have given notice of my intent but the attack continues, I have every right to use lethal force.
Thankfully my weapon is easy enough to use that even with my condition I can use it enough to be accurate at least twice on longer distance. But pistols aren't generally made for that, & when you're being assaulted it's usually at close range.
Since the biggest fear I have is it being taken from me, I enlisted the help of a cop friend who helped me design a holster with a tether that has been able to withstand every sheriff's deputy on the force we've asked to try and take the weapon. Those men are HUGE & not one of them has been able to take it from me. There's an optional second tether to secure myself to a rail or something is an attacker tries to take my weapon & pulls my whole body along with it (some officers did, so we realized the flaw). This is not attached so it cannot be used to tie me up instead. And the original tether is removable and sends an SOS signal with my location once removed if I press a certain point in the strap, in case I'm abducted.

You won't have time to do any of that tethering stuff. Look at the video of that 90+ year old knocked sideways into a fire hydrant on a new York sidewalk.

Usually these animals attack as a pack. Using one's fists or feet may not be a first line of defense option for those that are elderly. The better first line of defense may be taking a fighting stance with your hand on your weapon and announcing to the thugs that you are legally armed. Hopefully, that will be all it takes to disperse the cowards. If not, then you did provide a verbal warning and now be prepared to let loose to prevent bodily harm or death to yourself.

Yes it does. It is legal to use a firearm if you are faced with the credible treat of great bodily harm or potential death for yourself or another person. No one should accept a beat down or worse from anyone if that person has a legally owned firearm. I live in a "Stand Your Ground" State and you do not have to retreat from a great bodily harm or a deadly threat. An armed society is a polite society.
